The Big West upped its Major League Soccer player count Thursday as three players were selected in the MLS SuperDraft.
Cal State Northridge defender Chad Borak was the first player selected as he was taken in the third round, 40th overall, by the Colorado Rapids. The 2009 first team All-Big West selection anchored a defense that allowed just 22 goals in 20 games and posted seven shutouts. Borak was a starter in all 19 games he appeared in this season and totaled 73 games in his CSUN career.
The league had another third round selection as UC Santa Barbara's David Walker came off the board at the 43rd slot to the Houston Dynamo. Walker, a 2009 first team All-Big West choice, was the top goal scorer for the Gauchos in his senior season. After entering 2009 with six career tallies, Walker put 10 balls in the back of net to lead the conference and added four assists for a team-leading 24 points. He also accounted for all three UCSB goals in the postseason.
UC Irvine's Irving Garcia was the final Big West choice as he was selected in the fourth round 50th overall by Red Bull New York. Garcia has a banner senior season for the Anteaters, earning Big West Offensive Player of the Year and first team All-Big West accolades after leading the league in points (25), tying for the top spot in assists (9) and ranking third in goals (8). He was also a first team topdrawersoccer.com selection, a second team All-America honoree by College Soccer News and garnered third team status on the NSCAA/Performance Subaru ledger.
