Cal Poly's Adam Buschini and UC Irvine's Kyle Necke earned the final Big West Player/Pitcher of the Week honors of the season.
Buschini hit a home run in each of Cal Poly’s four home games this week and extended his hitting streak to 15 games. Buschini hit a single, double and home run against Santa Clara on Monday night, then went 4-for-11 in the UC Riverside with a double, three home runs and six RBI. In his last 25 games of the regular season, Buschini has 44 hits in 98 at-bats for a .449 average, lifting his season mark to .412 and tying the school Division I record set by Scott Kidd in 1997. Buschini’s home run Friday night snapped a 3-3 tie and he also drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning to force in what proved to be the winning run in a 6-5 victory. He hit a two-run shot Sunday to snap a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning but UC Riverside rallied for three runs in the ninth for the 6-5 win.
Necke struck out 10 batters in 7.1 innings to help UC Irvine to a 3-1 record, including a series win over UC Santa Barbara. Against UCLA, Necke entered and pitched a career-high 4.1 innings and struck out a personal-best eight batters to complete a 12-strikeout game for the Anteaters. Necke struck out the first four batters he faced and held UCLA to just one hit and retired the last nine straight before handing the ball off to the UCI bullpen. Necke then pitched three innings in relief against UC Santa Barbara Sunday, striking out two and yielding a run on one hit to help UCI capture the series and finish the conference with a 22-2 record. Necke did not walk a batter in his two appearances.
