D.J. Gentile tallied a game-winning run and a game-winning RBI, both in extra innings, to guide Cal Poly to a 4-0 week, while Daniel Bibona’s eight innings of shutout baseball helped UC Irvine to a series win over then-No. 1 Cal State Fullerton earning them Big West Pitcher/Player of the Week awards. Bibona picks up his second pitcher of the week honor in the past three weeks, while Gentile earns the first player of the week accolade for the Mustangs this year.
Gentile ( Petaluma, Calif.) went 9-for-16 in the Cal State Northridge series to extend his hit streak to 10 games. In Friday's 11-10, 10-inning affair, the sophomore designated hitter scored the game-winning run for the Mustangs. The following evening Gentile had more late-inning heroics as he laid down a bunt in the 12th inning that allowed the winning run to score. Earlier in the week against USC, he recorded his first of two doubles on the week and drove in one run. For the week he hit 10-for-19 (.526) with two doubles, one home run and five RBI.
Bibona (Lake Forest, Calif.) held top-ranked Cal State Fullerton scoreless through eight innings to improve to 5-1 on the year. The southpaw did not allow a hit until the fourth and scattered just four hits while striking out five and walking one. Just one runner reached third against Bibona, who matched a career-high with eight innings pitched. It also marked the second time this season Bibona has faced a team ranked No.1 (Texas A&M, 2/27) and he improves to 1-1 in such contests. The impressive performance Friday evening extends Bibona's shutout streak to 14 innings.
