Cal Poly's Geoff Gonzalez and UC Davis' Chelsea Stelzmiller both nabbed top medalist honors at the Anteater Invitational, hosted by conference foe UC Irvine, to earn March’s Big West Golfer of the Month honors.
Gonzalez was nearly unbeatable in the month of March, claiming one top medalist honor and two second place finishes. He kicked off the month blasting a three-round score of 217 to earn a second place finish at the Braveheart Classic. Two weeks later at his home tournament, the Cal Poly Intercollegiate, the Diablo, Calif., native shot 210 (67-71-72) and tied for first but lost in a playoff. The following week at the Anteater Invitational, Gonzalez locked down the top spot with a tournament-best 212 (69-73-70). His win at the Anteater Invitational is his first in three seasons at Cal Poly.
Stelzmiller won her second career tournament after firing a one-under-par 212 at the Anteater Invitational. The only player to post a sub-par three-round total, Stelzmiller entered the final round tied for first and eventually won the event by two shots. Earlier in the month the Placerville, Calif., native placed 12th at the Oregon Duck Invitational after shooting 228 (77-74-77). She also tied for 17th in the single-round Desert Individual Classic at the PGA West Stadium course.
