Miller Excels In Grueling Week For UC Irvine

Wes Miller (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS) earned Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, achieving nearly perfect results in a busy five-match week for the Anteaters.
Miller, who played at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions for UCI, posted a 4-1 record against opponents from Yale, Gonzaga, Portland, North Carolina-Wilmington and Penn. He won a pair of three-set matches on the week. Against Gonzaga's Conor Feeney, Miller pulled out a 6-2, 6-7, 10-4 victory. Miller also toppled Penn's Phil Law 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
In doubles action, Miller and teammate Khunpol Issara had an unblemished 5-0 mark at the No. 1 spot. Their biggest win was against the No. 38 nationally ranked team of Filip Zivkovic and Evan Schleining from Portland. The UCI tandem won that match 8-4, and ended the week with a hard fought 9-8 (5) victory against Hicham Laalej and Adam Schwartz.
Blalock and Jaworowski Share Women's Weekly Award

Brittany Blalock (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) and Cal State Northridge sophomore Nina Jaworowski (Calberlah, Germany) were selected Big West Men's Tennis Co-Athletes of the Week with both players recording undefeated singles marks.
Blalock continued her torrid play of late, extending her singles winning streak to eight straight. She dispatched her second ranked opponent in her last three matches, defeating No. 70 Jenni Heinser of San Francisco by a 6-2, 6-3 score. Blalock also rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Ashley Murdock of Memphis. She is now 10-1 on the year in dual matches, and is currently competing as Cal Poly's No. 1 player.
The Mustangs won all three of their matches against San Francisco (7-0), Memphis (7-0) and Cal State Fullerton (6-1). Blalock and partner Steffi Wong beat opponents from all three schools by an identical 8-4 score.
Jawowowski also had an impressive showing with a 4-0 record at No. 2 singles for the Matadors. She won her first three matches against foes from Southern Mississippi, UAB and Memphis with relative ease. She persevered through her most difficult match in a Big West showdown with Pacific, earning the deciding point in a 4-3 team victory. Jaworowski outlasted Jolanta Twarowska 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 to improve to 8-2 in her last 10 singles matches.
CSUN, which went 4-0 as a team on the week, saw Jaworowski and partner Nigora Sirojiddinova go 3-1 from the No. 2 doubles slot.
