Mike Zuanich's explosiveness at the plate and Brett Lorin's impressive performance on the mound led to Easton Big West Player and Pitcher of the Week accolades, for the week ending May 18. This is the first honor of the season for both athletes, while Long Beach State collects its second straight pitcher of the week honors. Senior Andrew Liebel nabbed his second award of the season last week with a complete-game shutout.
Zuanich guided UC Santa Barbara to a much-needed series sweep over UC Riverside with an impressive 9-for-12 (.750) performance. The Torrance, Calif., native compiled 10 runs and drove in eight. He also belted his 13th and 14th home runs of the season to lead the Big West Conference. With the help of a triple and two home runs to collect eight RBI, he now owns a league-leading 57 RBI on the year. The senior outfielder, who was a perfect 4-for-4 Saturday afternoon, also produced a 1.00 fielding percentage.
In his first career weekend start, Lorin went a career-best seven innings and gave up one unearned run on five hits. The Laguna Niguel, Calif., native retired seven in-a-row early on and then another eight consecutive batters later in the contest. He struck out two and walked one on 79 pitches, rolling eight ground outs and getting 10 fly outs. Prior to filling in for the injured Jake Thompson, Lorin had six weekday starts, went five innings just twice this season, and pitched a total of 32.0 innings in 13 appearances.
