For the second straight week, Cal State Fullerton's Adam Jorgenson earned Easton Big West Pitcher of the Week accolades after a stellar performance in a 16-inning showdown with defending Big West Champion UC Riverside. Completing the Titan sweep is Erik Komatsu, who picked up his first Easton Big West Player of the Week honor of the season with some clutch hitting.
Jorgenson turned in a dominating performance out of the bullpen Friday night, earning the win in the 16-inning Big West Conference opener at Goodwin Field, which tied for the longest game ever played by the Titans (innings). The Costa Mesa, Calif., native tossed the final 6.2 innings of the 16-inning marathon versus the Highlanders, striking out 14 of the 22 batters faced. Jorgenson, who surrendered just two singles and did not issue a walk, fanned 11 of the last 14 hitters to pickup his first win of the year.
Komatsu led the Titan squad in hitting last week (.450) and collected a team-leading nine hits and five runs in wins over No. 14 San Diego and UC Riverside. In the 3-1 week, the Camarillo, Calif., native also extended his hitting streak to eight games - a team high. In the midweek game against the Toreros, Komatsu singled and scored one of the Titans’ six runs to grab a 6-3 win.
The junior outfielder opened conference play going 5-for-7 with one run and two RBI. His two-out, two-run triple capped a five-run comeback and tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. His second triple of the game came in the 16th inning, which set up a sacrifice fly that earned Cal State Fullerton a 7-6 victory. He also tallied a double and two singles in Friday night’s win. In Saturday’s showdown Komatsu collected a hit and followed that up with a 2-for-3 outing in Sunday’s win. In the series-clinching victory, he blasted his team-leading fourth home run and scored two runs.
