UC Davis' Ryan Scoma earned Easton Big West Player of the Week honors and UC Irvine's Scott Gorgen and Pacific's Tyler Waldron picked up Easton Big West Co-Pitcher of the Week accolades, for the week ending March 16. This is the first honor of the season for Waldron and Scoma and the second for Gorgen.
Scoma led UC Davis to a perfect 5-0 record last week as they took a single game from Nevada and swept a four-game series with Santa Clara. The San Carlos, Calif., native finished the week with team-leading totals in eight categories, including batting average (.571), hits (12), runs (10), doubles (5) and home runs (2). The 6-2 junior opened the week with a second-inning grand slam in Wednesday's contest where he also tallied a season-high six RBI. In the series sweep over the Broncos, Scoma totaled four doubles, eight hits, a home run and seven RBI. He did not stand a runner in the five games and split time between designated hitter and right field.
On Friday, Gorgen held the opposition to just one hit for the third time this season, stifling the Hawaii offense and striking out nine in eight innings to lead the Anteaters to its sixth shutout of the season. The right-hander retired the first 12 batters he faced before a UC Irvine error allowed Hawaii to reach base. The Warriors' only hit off Gorgen, who faced just four above the minimum, came in the seventh inning. The Concord, Calif., native was one strikeout shy of reaching double-digits for third time this year.
Also sharing co-pitcher of the week honors is Waldron, who broke Pacific out of its seven-game losing streak with a dominant performance against Minnesota. The freshman right-hander posted a complete-game three-hit shutout in the Tigers' 1-0 victory over the Golden Gophers. Waldron, facing just 30 batters in the win, fanned 11 batters and walked one. The Pilot Hill, Calif., native closed out the ninth inning by striking out the side to pitch around two Pacific errors and preserve the 1-0 win.
