Wins over ranked opponents earned UC Irvine's Ollie Linton and Cal State Fullerton's Daniel Renken Easton Big West Player and Pitcher of the Week accolades, for the week ending March 9.
Linton led the Anteaters last week, batting .400 in a combined four games against No. 17 San Diego and No. 22 Tulane. The centerfielder was 6-for-15 with eight RBI and stole six bases on seven attempts. Linton vaulted himself to third in UCI’s career records with 42 stolen bases and is three away from the No. 2 slot.
Against the Toreros, the Winnetka, Calif., native drove in a pair of runs on 1-for-3 hitting. In Saturday’s 7-3 win against the Green Wave, Linton registered a career-high four RBI, going 2-for-3 at the plate, including his first home run of the season. The follow day he extended his hit streak to six and collected two additional RBI. Linton currently leads the Anteater squad with five multiple-hit games and four multiple-RBI contests.
In just his second career start, Renken tossed seven innings of three-hit, one run baseball to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 13-2 win over No. 3 UCLA Wednesday evening. The Cypress, Calif., native worked perfect through four innings of work, setting all 12 batters he aced down on just 35 pitches before back-to-back extra base hits broke the no-hit shutout bid leading off the fifth inning. Renken, fanned a career-high 10 batters, did not allow his third hit of the game until the seventh inning.
The freshman right-hander also picked up a win in relief on Sunday, leading the Titan pitching staff with two of the team’s five wins this week. Against Southern Miss, he visited the mound with the scored tied at 5-5 and worked 1.1 innings, collecting a pair of strikeouts and his third win of the year. He was the beneficiary of a five-run Titan outburst in the eventual 19-6 win.
