Tournament Winners Nicolson and Yocum Capture Big West Golfer of the Month Awards

Cal State Northridge senior Kyle Nicolson (Upland, Calif./Santa Barbara CC) and Cal Poly sophomore Stephanie Yocum (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula HS) earned individual medalist honors in tournament action, earning them Big West Men's and Women's Golfer of the Month accolades for the month of February.

Nicolson captured the first tournament victory of his career after carding a 9-under par total of 207 at the GADO North Texas Classic on Feb. 17-18.  He posted his low round of the year with a final-round 67, finishing two strokes ahead of Jose Toledo from New Orleans.  Nicolson and Toledo were co-leaders among the 71-player field after the first two rounds.  Nicolson shot a 69 and 71 through the first 36 holes.

The Matadors finished second among the 14 participating teams.

For the season, Nicolson is averaging 74.0 strokes per round.  This is the second tournament win by a Northridge golfer, as Nick Delio won the Santa Clara Invitational in October.

Yocum prevailed at the Lady Braveheart Challenge (Feb. 11-12) as she equalled her career-best total for 36 holes with a 7-over par 151 total.  It was her first career collegiate title as she added a 76 to the 75 she carded on Monday.

Yocum, who bested the field of 101 golfers, also led the Mustangs to the team title.  The Mustangs shot a 53-over par 653, outdistancing San Diego State by 16 strokes.  There were 17 teams which competed in the Lady Braveheart Challenge.
