Cal State Fullerton's Friday-night starter Wes Roemer and UC Santa Barbara's Matt Valaika both picked up their first Easton Big West Pitcher/Player of the Week honors this season, for the week ending May 6.

Against UC Santa Barbara, the junior right-hander tossed his fourth complete game of the season and set a career-high in strikeouts, fanning 13 Gauchos for his seventh win of the season. The Glendora, Calif., native grew stronger as the game progressed, picking up eight strikeouts between the sixth and eighth innings. He carried a shutout going into the ninth inning, facing just two over the minimum. In the Titans' lone win of the Gauchos series, Roemer surrendered just one run on six hits, facing just four over the minimum.

A 4-for-12 (.33) weekend performance, Valaika became the first freshman to earn player of the week accolades this season. In the weekend series against nationally-ranked Cal State Fullerton, the Valencia, Calif., native scored four runs and drove in an additional four runs to guide UC Santa Barbara to the Gauchos first series win over the Titans since 2001. The 5-9 second baseman, who blasted two home runs this weekend, reached base and scored in the decisive ninth inning in both Saturday and Sunday's contests.

Others nominated for this week's honor were pitcher Stephen Penney (UC Riverside), second baseman Matt Cline (Long Beach State) and left fielder Aaron Wible (UC Riverside).
