UC Irvine outfielder Taylor Holiday and UC Riverside pitcher Matt Montgomery led their respective teams to conference sweeps last week to nab Easton Big West Player/Pitcher of the Week accolades. This is the first honor of the season for both athletes.
Holiday batted .556 to guide UC Irvine to a 4-0 week, as the Anteaters recorded the highest number of wins in its Division I history with 38 victories and moved into a tie for second place in the conference. The Dana Point, Calif., native was 10-for-18 with seven runs scored and three RBI. He also blasted three triples, tying him for first on the team and in the conference with seven triples on the year. Holiday tallied four multi-hit games last week to improve his mark to 22, sixth-best in the Big West.
In just his second career start, Montgomery pitched UC Riverside into first place in the Big West with a 2-1 win at No. 11 Long Beach State. Giving up a single run with two outs in the ninth inning, he came within one strike of his first career complete game and shutout. The Sun City, Calif., tossed 8.2 innings and scattered nine hits, while striking out three and not conceding a walk to win his second straight start. Montgomery improves to 4-0 on the year.
Others nominated for this week's honor were pitchers Thomas Eager (Cal Poly) and Scott Gorgen (UC Irvine) and outfielder Joey Gonzales (UC Riverside).
