UC Riverside's James Simmons and Cal Poly's Grant Desme picked up Big West Pitcher/Player of the Week accolades, for the week ending April 1. This marks Simmons' second honor of the year, while Desme earns Cal Poly’s first award of the 2007 season.

Simmons threw a complete game three-hitter, along with five strikeouts, at UC Davis Friday afternoon to improve to 6-1 on the season. The Norco, Calif., native retired the game's first 11 batters before having his no-hitter broken up by a two-out single in the fourth. He followed that up by shutting down the next 12 batters in order. He carried his one-hitter into the ninth inning before conceding an unearned run as UC Riverside went on to defeat the Aggies 4-1.

Desme's power at the plate guided the Mustangs to a sweep over the Pacific Tigers to open conference play. He went 10-for-16 (.625) and hit for the cycle, with two doubles, one triple and two home runs. The current Big West home run leader drove in seven RBI, while also scoring seven runs of his own. Hailing from Bakersfield, Calif., Desme recorded three hits and one walk in each of the first two games and four hits in Sunday’s showdown.
