Cal Poly junior Chris Kirk (Redondo Beach, CA/Redondo Union HS) and Long Beach State junior Kay Hoey (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga HS) garnered the Big West Men's and Women's Golfer of the Month awards for April after taking home the individual titles of their respective tournaments.
Kirk put on an outstanding display to win medalist honors at the Ogio Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Apr. 2-3 at the Alisal River Golf Course. He shot a school single round record 64 in the first round, followed by rounds of 67 and 68. His three-round total of 199 (-17) led him to a four-stroke victory. Kirk also broke school records for 36-hole total (131) and 54-hole total (199). The round of 64 bettered the previous record of 65 that three-time Big West Golfer of the Year Travis Bertoni had set twice during his career.
Hoey had a record-setting performance of her own in winning the Peg Barnard California Collegiate (Apr. 6-7) at the Stanford University Golf Course. She shot an eight-under par 134 to capture the title by three strokes. Her opening round 65 set a new school record, breaking her old mark of 67 which she established earlier this year. Hoey's 134 also was a school record for a two-day score. It was Hoey's third tournament win of the year and fifth total at Long Beach State.
