Shane Peterson and Bryan Shaw guided Long Beach State to a perfect 5-0 week, which included two wins over nationally-ranked Pepperdine, to earn Big West Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, for the week ending April 15. Peterson picks up his first honor of the season, while Shaw grabs his second accolade of the year.
In Tuesday's continuation of the February 6 game against Pepperdine, which was originally suspended due to darkness, Shaw retired the final 12 Waves in order to give the 49ers a 10-7 win in the 11th inning. Tuesday’s win was also Long Beach State's 12th win over a ranked opponent this season. On Saturday against Cal State Northridge, the sophomore right-hander tossed one inning, allowing just one hit and striking out three, to pick up his sixth save of the season. In four complete innings, the Livermore, Calif., native posted seven strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA, while walking one.
In Long Beach State's 5-0 week, Peterson extended his hit streak to nine games. In the continuation of a Feb. 6 game against the Waves, the sophomore first baseman blasted a game-winning two-run single in the 11th inning. He followed that up with three multi-hit games, one against Pepperdine and the other two versus Cal State Northridge. In the Pepperdine matchup he tied the game in the ninth with a RBI double, before LBSU went on to defeat the Waves, 6-5.
For the week, he batted 9-for-16 (.562), which included three doubles and one triple, and scored four runs and eight RBI. In Friday's contest against Cal State Northridge, the Temecula, Calif., native also visited the mound and pitched 5.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits and striking out a career-best six.
The 25th-ranked 49ers return to the diamond Tuesday evening to host Loyola Marymount before entertaining UC Davis in a weekend series.
