UC Riverside's Marc Rzepczynski and Long Beach State's Brandon Godfrey picked up Big West Baseball Pitcher and Player of the Week honors, for the week ending March 11.
In UC Riverside's mid-week contest at No. 20 USC, Rzepczynski tossed his first complete-game to guide the Highlanders to a 4-1 win. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native improved to 4-0 on the season after striking out six and allowing just one run in Tuesday night’s showdown. Last week's performance lowered his ERA to a team-leading 2.52.
Godfrey batted .667 over the week, going 10-for-15 with four runs and four RBI, to guide the Long Beach State 49ers to a series win over 11th-ranked Arizona State. The junior first baseman scored three runs and three RBI with his five-hit performance in Sunday’s series-clinching victory. Godfrey also collected multi-hit games in the first two contests against the Sun Devils, hitting 3-for-4 Friday and 2-for-5 Saturday. For the week, the Cypress, Calif., native crossed home plate four times, while also driving home four teammates.
UC Riverside continues its eight-game home stand this week when they welcome San Diego State and Santa Clara to the Riverside Sports Complex. Long Beach State, in the midst of a seven-game road trip, returns to action this week for a mid-week contest at UCLA and a weekend series at Wichita State.
