Seven Swimmers Vie For National Titles

Seven Big West athletes set their sights on a national title when they head to the Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn., for the 2007 Men's Swimming & Diving National Championships March 15-17. UC Irvine leads the Big West schools with four representatives, while Pacific is sending two and UC Santa Barbara is showcasing one athlete.

The Anteater quartet of Eddie Erazo, Simonsen Daniel, Tom Randall and Eric Reilly are slated to compete in both the 200 and 400 medley relay. They enter the events sitting in eighth in the 400 and 10th in the 200.

All four members of the UCI relay team are also competing in individual events. Reilly made the cut in the 50 free, while Simonsen secured spots in the 100 breast and 200 back. Erazo and Tom are both scheduled to participate in the maximum amount of three events. With a mark of 46.47, Tom locked in the fourth slot in the 200 fly and sits 19th and 22nd in the 200 IM and 200 fly . Teammate Erzao will also be competing in both fly events and the 100 backstroke.

Tiger teammates Wojceich Betlej and Krzysztof Zoldak are jet-setting across the country to compete in a pair of events in the 2007 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championship this week. Betlej recorded a top 20 time to land a spot in the 200 back and a 33rd placing in the 100 back. In the 200 and 400 individual medley, Zoldak enters the races in the 21st and 23rd position.

The final Big West athlete scheduled to appear at the NCAAs is Gaucho Pat Cary, who will compete in the 200 fly after posting the fifth-best time in the country at 1:44.22. The 19th-fastest time of 47.25 in the 100 fly earned him a start in his second event of the three-day meet.

The 2007 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships gets underway Thursday, March 15 and concludes on Saturday, March 17. Live results can be obtained at www.gophersports.com.
