Long Beach State freshman Michael Drake (Riverside, CA/Martin Luther King HS) and UC Irvine senior Brian Edick (Valencia, CA/Hart HS) were named Big West Men's Co-Golfers of the Month for February, while Long Beach State junior Kay Hoey (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga HS) captured the Women's Golfer of the Month honor.
Drake competed in one tournament for the 49ers, the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Honolulu, Hawaii, and posted a third place finish among a field of 123 competitors. It was his highest finish as a 49er. He shot a 10-under three-round total of 206, and held the first round lead with a 65. Drake recorded 21 birdies over the 54 holes. He also defeated all five of the top 25 ranked players (Golfweek) that were in the field. The 49ers tied for 11th among 21 teams in the tournament.
Edick played in two tournaments and helped UCI to a pair of top five finishes, including the championship as the host school of the 10-team Anteater Invitational on Feb. 26-27. Edick finished in third place among 54 participants, as the Anteaters won the tournament for the first time since 1996. UCI came in fifth place at the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate on Jan. 29-30, with Edick finishing fifth as well on the individual leaderboard. He shot a three round 206, including two consecutive rounds of 68.
Hoey, who earned the Golfer of the Month award in September, started off the spring season on an impressive note. She won her fourth tournament as a 49er, shooting a two-over 146 to capture medalist honors at the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational on Feb. 26-27. She shot an even par 72 in Tuesday's final round after an opening round 74.
