A complete game shutout earned UC Riverside's James Simmons Big West Pitcher of the Week, while UC Irvine's Matt Morris blasted a .692 batting average, including a perfect 5-for-5 outing on Saturday, to grab the conference's player of the week honor.

In his first Friday-night start of the season, Highlander James Simmons tossed a four-hit complete game and tied the UC Riverside Division I record with 15 strikeouts in the 3-0 win over San Francisco. His 15 strikeouts tops his previous career high of 10, achieved three times last season, and ties Chris Smith’s five-year old school record. In his first complete game, the 6-4 right-hander faced just four batters over the minimum and threw 128 pitches, 95 for strikes. The Norco, Calif., native, who allowed just one runner to reach second, improved to 3-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 0.45.

In the three-game sweep at Houston, Morris, currently riding a team-high eight game hitting streak, batted 9-for-13 (.692) with three doubles. The Orange, Calif., native scored five runs, while driving in an additional four runs. In Friday's 9-7 win, Morris hit a RBI single to give UCI a 2-0 lead and later in the game he drew a walk and would eventually score the go-ahead run.

Morris' perfect 5-for-5 performance on Saturday included a RBI double that knotted the game. Later in the contest the 6-1 outfielder singled and scored in UC Irvine’s four-run seventh. In Sunday’s contest he singled and scored what would be the team’s eventual game-winning run in the third. He is hitting .563 this season with a team-high 18 hits.
