The Big West champion Cal State Fullerton Titans learned they would face a familiar postseason foe when the 64-team bracket for the 2007 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship was announced Monday. For the third time in four postseason appearances, the Titans travel north up the 405 freeway for first and second round matches hosted by UCLA.
The Titans (12-7-2) will meet the host Bruins (16-1-2) in Friday's first round at 5:30 p.m., with San Diego (15-2-3) and Oklahoma State (13-5-3) to follow at 8:00 p.m. in the other first round matchup. The two winners will battle in second round action on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
CSF is 0-2 all-time against UCLA in NCAA Tournament matches, having previously faced the Bruins in Westwood in 2001 and 2006. The Titans fell 3-0 in their inaugural NCAA appearance in 2001. Last season, CSF met UCLA in the second round and lost, 3-1. The Titans are 0-10 all-time against the Bruins dating back to their first meeting in 1993, the first year CSF fielded a team.
This is the fourth NCAA Tournament appearance for the Titans, who are 3-3 all-time. CSF became the first Big West program to advance to the round of 16, beating UNLV and USC as a host in 2005. In 2006, the Titans achieved another Big West first when they won first round games in consecutive seasons. CSF knocked off Loyola Marymount, 3-0, in last year's opening round before falling to UCLA.
CSF won its third consecutive Big West Tournament championship last weekend at Titan Stadium. The top-seeded Titans defeated UC Irvine in the semifinals and, after 110 minutes of regulation and overtime soccer, outlasted Cal Poly in a penalty kick shootout, 4-3.
Demian Brown became the first individual in Big West history to capture both the league's regular season and tournament titles in his first season as a head coach. The Titans shared the regular season crown with Long Beach State at 6-2-0. Brown was an assistant with the Titans during their runs to the postseason the last two years.
The Titans are 4-7 all-time against San Diego, including a 1-0 loss to the Toreros in the regular season finale on Nov. 1. CSF and Oklahoma State have never met on the pitch. UCLA is the fifth top 25 team the Titans will be facing this season. They are 1-3 against the other top 25 clubs that also reached the field of 64.
Tickets for the first and second rounds are $9 for adults and $7 for youth/students.
