UC Irvine's Jaime Martinez played an important role in both of the Anteaters' wins over Cal Poly, while Long Beach State's Andrew Carpenter and Pacific's Joey Centanni pitched complete games, earning them player and co-pitcher of the week honors for the week ending April 16.

Senior infielder Jaime Martinez batted .500 (6-for-12) to guide UC Irvine to its first Big West series win of the season at Cal Poly. The Oxnard, Calif., native drove in the Anteaters' only run Thursday and started a ninth-inning rally with his second double of the evening. Unfortunately, the Anteaters came up short, falling to the Mustangs 2-1. On Friday, Martinez singled and scored in a two-run rally that would give UCI a 4-3 win to tie the series. In the Saturday matinee, his double drove in the Anteaters' first run of the game and he later scored on a double which would prove to be the eventual game-winning run. For the week, he led the team with six hits and posted a slugging percentage of .750.

Earning his third pitcher of the week honor for the 2006 season is 49er Andrew Carpenter. Hailing from Vacaville, Calif., the junior right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game in the 5-1 win at Cal State Northridge. He gave up just one run while scattering five hits, en route to a 1.00 ERA. In just 105 pitches he struck out a career-best 10 and retired seven in a row, earning his fifth win of the year.

Joining Carpenter as co-pitcher of the week is southpaw Joey Centanni. The San Diego, Calif., native needed just 95 pitches to record Pacific's first complete-game victory of the year. The 5-11 freshman struck out four and gave up no walks, while retiring 18 of the final 19 Gauchos. The 31 batters faced included 12 fly outs, 11 ground outs and four strike outs. Behind the arm of Centanni, the Tigers downed UC Santa Barbara 2-1.
