The underclassmen shined in this week's Big West Player and Pitcher of the Week honors with freshman Joe Oliveira grabbing player of the week for Pacific, while sophomore pitcher Wes Roemer earned the Titans' second consecutive honor, for the week ending April 9. Oliveira is the first freshman to earn player of the week status this season, while Roemer is one of two sophomores to represent the Big West on the mound. UC Riverside's James Simmons was the first sophomore pitcher this year to receive the weekly award.
Oliveira was crucial to the Tigers winning the series against UC Davis, 2-to-1. After falling to the Aggies on Friday, Pacific won games two and three, both in extra innings with the San Diego, Calif., native playing an important role in both wins. On Saturday, the 6-0 catcher drove in the Tigers' lone run in regulation with an RBI single in the fourth. Later in the 10th inning, Oliveira recorded his first extra base hit on the season with a three-run triple. Pacific would go on to win the game 5-1. On Sunday, he added an RBI bases loaded walk in Pacific's four-run ninth, sending it to extra innings. The Tigers claimed their second victory over UC Davis in the 11th with a score of 7-6.
Hailing from Glendora, Calif, Roemer earned his second consecutive Big West Pitcher of the Week honor after throwing eight scoreless innings in the Titans' 7-0 victory at UC Irvine. He allowed just four hits, struck out five and pitched his ninth game without a walk. The right-handed pitcher, 7-0 on the mound, holds a 75:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Roemer, who has recorded three weekly honors this season, lowered his overall ERA to a 1.53 after Friday night’s outing. The No. 1 Cal State Fullerton Titans would eventually take the series from UC Irvine, 2-1.
