The Big West Conference announced today the Golf Athlete of the Month award winners for the fall season. Long Beach State sophomore Kay Hoey heads the list of winners, earning Women's Athlete of the Month honors in September, October and November. Hoey, who was the 2005 Big West Women's Golf Athlete of the Year, placed in the top ten in three tournaments in the fall with her best finish occurring in the month of November, a third place finish at the Kent Youel Invitational. Hoey shared the award in the month of October with UC Irvine's Selanee Henderson. Henderson placed second at the Nittany Lion Invitational while leading the Anteaters to a second consecutive tournament title. Henderson also placed third earlier in the month at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
On the men's side, a pair of UC Irvine athletes and a Long Beach State athlete won the awards. UCI sophomore Kenny Kim was named the Big West Men's Golf Athlete of the Month for September after finishing in second place at the Northwest Collegiate Classic. Teammate Tim Cha was awarded the Athlete of the Month award for October. Cha earned medalist honors at The Prestige tournament with a three under par 213. He became the first freshman in UC Irvine history to win a Division I tournament. Long Beach State's Ryan Wood was the Men's Golf Athlete of the Month for November. Wood finished tenth at the Del Walker Intercollegiate, shooting an even par 213.
