Long Beach State junior Kay Hoey (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga HS) and Cal Poly junior David Lewinski (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente HS) earned Big West Female and Male Golfer of the Month honors for September in a vote of the league's head coaches today. Both golfers won individual titles in tournament competition to highlight their performances.
Hoey earned her sixth career Golfer of the Month honor after claiming her third career tournament victory, winning the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic. She posted a school record low round of 67 in the opening round and followed that up with rounds of 74 and 68, giving her a three-day total of 209. The 209 mark also set a school record and obliterated the old mark, which she held, by seven strokes. Hoey also competed in the Oregon State Invitational on Sept. 18-19 and finished in a tie for sixth. She shot a three-round total of 220, with a first round 71 her best score.
The 49ers as a team finished eighth at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic and third in the Oregon State Invitational. Both tournaments had 17 teams in the field.
Lewinski collected his first tournament victory as a collegian when he won the Merrill Lynch Purple and Red Invitational in Layton, Utah on Sept. 18-19. He had a career-best three-round total of 208 (72-68-68) for 8-under par. Both rounds of 68 matched his career-high, which he originally shot at the NCAA West Regional last May in Tucson, Ariz. Earlier in the month, Lewinski finished in a tie for 50th at the Del Walker Intercollegiate, hosted by Long Beach State. He carded a three-round total of 222 (75-69-78) at that event.
Cal Poly finished 11th out of 14 teams at the Del Walker Intercollegiate and had a third place showing among 17 teams in the Purple and Red Invitational.
