Chris Malec, UC Santa Barbara (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita HS)
Chris Malec (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) came back from cancer surgery to lift his Gauchos to a series win over then-No. 10 Long Beach State. In his first start at-bat, the 6-0 senior shortstop blasted a grand slam to help lift UC Santa Barbara to its second win in the series. In game three of the series, Malec knocked out a double and earned a walk.
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Brett Manning, Pacific (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS)
Brett Manning batted a blazing .750 against Saint Mary’s to help spark the Tigers to a 6-1 nonconference win before going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a pair of runs in a 6-5 Big West win over UC Irvine. A fielder’s choice in the eighth gave way to Manning scoring the winning run for Pacific. The 6-1 freshman first baseman finished the week with three RBI, batting .500 with a 1.111 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
Jimmy Shull, Cal Poly (Downey, Calif./Warren HS)
Jimmy Shull tacked up his second complete game of the season and gave his Mustangs their first win over Cal State Fullerton since 2002. The 6-2 senior righty’s fourth straight win came after serving up a season-high nine strikeouts to the top-ranked Titans. Shull allowed five hits and one earned run while walking one, and 75 of his 114 pitches went for strikes.
