Big West Trio Garner Weekly Honors after Domination on the Diamond

PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Justin Turner, Cal State Fullerton (Lakewood, Calif./Mayfair HS)

Turner had at least two hits in each of the Titans’ three games versus No. 9 Arizona, helping his team to a 2-1 series edge over the Wildcats. The 5-11 junior second baseman went 7-for-13 from the plate, with three runs scored and five RBI. Turner was also perfect from the field at the four spot.

CO-PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
Gary Daley, Cal Poly (Grass Valley, Calif./Nevada Union HS)

Daley threw a one-hit shutout in a 6-0 victory over Washington on Saturday at home. The 6-2 sophomore right-hander tossed the first complete-game shutout for the Mustangs in two years, and recorded Cal Poly’s first one-hitter at the Division I level (1995). Daley gave up only two walks, struck out seven batters and had retired 13 consecutive batters before giving up the lone hit in the sixth.

CO-PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
Cesar Ramos, Long Beach State (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho HS)

Ramos outdueled fellow All-American and Team USA teammate Mike Pelfrey of No. 14 Wichita State with a four-hit shutout victory on the road versus the Shockers. The 6-2 junior lefty went the distance, allowing four hits and one walk, while striking out two to lead Long Beach State to its third road series advantage over a top-15 team this season. Ramos tied Abe Alvarez for the most wins (22) by a 49er left-hander. The decision was Ramos’ second career shutout.
