Matt Cunningham helped the Highlanders to a home win over No. 20 USC and two wins over Sacramento State. The 6-2 outfielder hit .500 (6-12) with four home runs, four runs scored and seven RBI in three games. His two-run bomb in the eighth inning versus USC put the Highlanders up for good, as Cunningham recorded his first career multi-home run game.
CO-PLAYER: Sergio Pedroza, Cal State Fullerton (Covina, Calif./Northview HS)
Junior right fielder Sergio Pedroza compiled a 1.385 slugging percentage over four games for the Titans last week, including three home runs and a triple during Cal State Fullerton’s series win over top-ranked Tulane. After batting .333 in a nonconference win over Cal State Northridge, the 6-0 outfielder had an RBI triple in the Titans’ 15-1 win over Tulane and then had a pair of homers in a 3-for-4 effort in a 9-8 victory the next day. He added another blast and batted .500 in the final game of the series, a 13-9 loss.
PITCHER: Steve Schroer, UC Irvine (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS)
Senior right-hander Steve Schroer led the Anteaters to their first tournament win of any kind since the program began playing Division I baseball in 1977-78. The 6-2 righty was named Public Storage/USC Most Valuable Pitcher after picking up wins against No. 9 Wichita State and No. 20 USC. Against the Shockers, Schroer threw three innings with a K, giving up only one run to earn the win. Against the Trojans on their home turf, Schroer tossed 7.0 innings, striking out two while allowing only two runs to get the victory.
