Two Aces, One Big Bat Earn Big West Baseball Honors: First 2005 Awards for Sarver, Winter and Berezay

PLAYER: Matt Berezay, Pacific (Manteca, Calif./Modesto JC)
Junior outfielder Matt Berezay had two-run home runs in both Pacific wins over UCLA last week. Trailing 5-4 in the sixth, he hit what proved to be the game-winning home run. On Sunday, his two-run shot in the sixth put the Tigers up 8-4 on the way to a 10-9 win. Berezay finished the weekend with a 1.111 slugging percentage and a .615 on-base percentage.

PITCHER: Scott Sarver, Cal State Fullerton (Covina, Calif./South Hills HS)
Senior left-hander Scott Sarver staked the Titans to a series win over UNLV last week after having two Sunday starts rained out since his last on Feb. 15. At the infamously windy Las Vegas field, Sarver pitched seven innings of shutout ball, scattering four hits and striking out seven on the way to an 8-0 win. He retired 10 of the last 11 batters.

PITCHER: Haley Winter, UC Riverside (Oakland, Calif./Miramonte HS)
Junior right-hander Haley Winter pitched a complete-game five-hitter at No. 9 Arizona to give UCR the series win in a 3-1 victory. He came one out away from shutting out the Wildcats, which had been averaging 11 runs per game. Winter had a three-hit shutout before allowing two hits and a run in the bottom of the ninth. He struck out three and walked one.
