Cal State Northridge sophomore Michael Paulk (Upland, Calif.) was named Big West Player of the Week. The Matador first baseman led an offensive onlaught that saw CSUN score 50 runs in three games against Pacific. Paulk was 9-for-20 with eight runs scored and nine RBI, including a double and two home runs for the week.
Cal State Fullerton senior Jason Windsor (Saratoga, Calif.) was named Big West Pitcher of the Week. The Titan right-hander hurled his sixth consecutive complete game to help CSF clinch the Big West championship. Windsor went all 10 innings in the marathon matchup against LBSU's Jered Weaver, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out a career-high 12 batters. He retired the first 11 batters of the game and the final 10 batters of the game.
Regular Season Ends with Big West Non-Conference Matchups
Heading into the final week of the college baseball season, three Big West teams will wrap up their schedules with non-conference games. Long Beach State will head to Miami for a three-game series against the Hurricanes. UC Irvine goes north for a three-game set against Washington. Pacific concludes its schedule with a midweek game against Hawai'i.
For the second straight year, Long Beach State will conclude the regular season against Miami. Last season the Hurricanes took 2-of-3 against the 49ers. LBSU is 8-13 all-time against Miami.
UC Irvine will finish the regular season with a three-game series against Pac-10 foe Washington. The Anteaters are 4-4 all-time versus the Huskies, but have gone 9-2-1 against Pac-10 teams this season. Washington finished second in its league, while UCI finished in a tie for fourth.
Pacific concludes with a midweek game against Hawai'i. The Tigers will be trying to finish the season on a winning note after being swept by Cal State Northridge last week.
Cal State Fullerton Captures Big West Title
Cal State Fullerton wasted no time in clinching its 11th Big West crown with a win in game one of its series last week. The Titans tied the game at 1-1 in the ninth inning after being one strike away from a loss. Fullerton didn't stop there, coming back to sweep the series and finishing with the second-best winning conference record all-time. The Titans' .905 league winning percentage is the best in school history and is second all-time to the 1988 Fresno State team that finished 20-1 (.952).
The Titans are just the second Big West ever to finish with a .900 or better winning percentage and first to finish .800 or better since the 1999 CSF squad. Fullerton clinched a NCAA postseason berth for the 13th straight year, which is the fifth longest current streak in the nation.
