CSF's Romero, UCSB's Malec and UCR's Salotti Earn Big West Baseball Weekly Honors

UC Santa Barbara junior Chris Malec (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and UC Riverside freshman Nick Salotti were named Big West co-Players of the Week. The Gaucho second baseman sparked an offense that exploded for 22 runs against Fresno State. Malec hit safely in all four games last week, posting a .368 average (7-for-19) with four runs scored and 10 RBI, including two doubles and two stolen bases. The Highlander catcher ignited a, 9-8, comeback win against Washington in the Riverside RBI Tournament. Down 5-1, Salotti belted a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. For the week, he batted .529 (9-for-17) with two runs scored and seven RBI.

Cal State Fullerton sophomore Ricky Romero (East LA, Calif.) was named Big West Pitcher of the Week. The Titan lefty earned Kia Bash Most Outstanding Pitcher honors after tossing a four-hit complete game in a, 7-1, win over Georgia Tech. Romero, who struck out 12 and walked two, retired 18-of-19 batters over one stretch. After allowing a leadoff double in the third, he did not allow a hit until the ninth inning.
