UC Irvine sophomore Dan Simonsen (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) is this week’s Big West Male Swimmer of the Week after bettering his Big West-best times in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke at the Speedo Cup. He took third in the 100 race in 56.19 seconds and 9th in the 200 with 2:05.45. He also helped the Anteater 200 medley relay to third in 1:32.79.
UC Irvine freshman Chelsea Nagata (Kahului, Hawai’i/Maui HS) had two fourth-place finishes and one fifth at the Speedo Cup while breaking the school record in the 50 freestyle (23.62) and helping break another in the 200 medley relay (1:45.89). Her third-place time in the 100 butterfly (55.69) is the fastest in the Big West this season.
