2025-26 Big West Year in Review

As we look back on the stellar 2025-26 campaign across all 21 Big West conference-sponsored sports and prepare to usher in a new era in the conference, see some of the top teams, players and moments from the field of play and beyond. Whether exhibiting pacific sprit, practicing fearless innovation, participating in bold activism, displaying enduring integrity or celebrating boundless opportunity, The Big West pillars shone bright all season long. 

  • The Big West Postseason 

    Provided a championship experience for every Big West sport offered, with postseason competition opportunities for up to 2,721 student-athletes.

    Every member-institution had at least eight teams compete in The Big West postseason.

    Showcasing the parity of the league and competitiveness of Big West postseason events, only four No. 1 seeds claimed a Big West crown in bracketed sports (UC Santa Barbara women’s tennis, UC Santa Barbara men’s tennis, Hawai’i women’s water polo, Cal State Fullerton softball).

    National Postseason 

    FOUR team sports with multiple participants in the national championship, also known as #TwoBidBigWest, and even #ThreeBidBigWest (men’s volleyball, beach volleyball, baseball, women’s golf).

    FIVE team sports with at least one win on the national stage (women’s volleyball, men’s volleyball, beach volleyball, softball, baseball).

    ONE national champion in men’s volleyball, making six titles in the last eight seasons belonging to a Big West program.

    Individual Awards & Accolades 

    A total of 31 student-athletes in seven sports earned All-Region honors from various coaches groups.

    An impressive 61 student-athletes claimed All-American status in 2025-26. 

    UC Santa Barbara pitcher Jackson Flora was named national Pitcher of the Year by Perfect Game and the College Baseball Foundation and UC Irvine men’s volleyball player Andrej Jokanovic picked up AVCA Newcomer of the Year honors as Big West student-athletes earned national postseason recognition.

    Three Big West student-athletes earned honors from the Orange County Sports Commission for their performances in 2025-26: UC Irvine basketball players and Big West Players of the Year Hunter Hernandez and Kyle Owens were named Female and Male College Athlete of the Year, respectively, and Cal State Fullerton women’s soccer player Ashlyn Gwynn was named the Rising Star Award winner from the organization.

    Student-athletes from men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s volleyball and baseball were named national players of the week for their respective sports.

    The Big West had two men's soccer standouts selected in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft. UC Davis senior defender Zack Lillington was selected with the seventh overall pick to St. Louis CITY SC. Cal State Fullerton redshirt freshman midfielder/defender Aiden Bengard was picked 67th overall in the third round by Minnesota United FC. The draftees become the 58th and 59th Big West men's soccer players, respectively, to be selected in the history of the MLS SuperDraft.

    Beyond Sports 

    A total of 440 student-athletes earned recognition on The Big West Fall All-Academic team. Additionally, 241 student-athletes were named to The Big West Winter All-Academic team, with the Spring All-Academic Team and Commissioner's Honor Roll yet to be awarded.

    CSC Academic All-District Teams have included 251 Big West student-athletes in the 2025-26 academic year. 

    The Big West boasts one Academic All-American in baseball in UC Davis pitcher Rowen Barnes.

    Three Big West student-athletes were named prestigious NCAA Elite Scholar Award winners (previously named Elite 90), given to the individual at a championship event with the highest GPA: Timothy Kerr (UC Davis men’s water polo), Gabrielle Doyle (Hawai’i women’s water polo) and Ofeck Hazan (Hawai’i men’s volleyball).

    The Big West unlocked a $50,000 grant for the Kay Yow Fund through the Tough Like Tammy campaign that is being invested directly into Southern California.

    For Country

    Big West alumni Michael Boxall (New Zealand/UC Santa Barbara) and Max Arfsten (United States/UC Davis) are competing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

    Two-time Big West Golfer of the Year and Cal State Fullerton alumna Davina Xanh took to the course at the prestigious Curtis Cup to as one of 16 amateurs in the competition between Team GB&I and the United States. Xanh hails from Weston Super Mare, England.

    No fewer than 17 current and former Big West men’s volleyball standouts representing eight countries are in the midst of competition in the Volleyball Nations League.

    Eleven Big West men’s and women’s student-athletes representing five member-institutions were chosen as part of the 2026 Beach Collegiate National Team training alongside USA Volleyball’s Beach National Team this summer.


  • CROSS COUNTRY 


    Cal Poly swept the top of the podium in both men’s and women’s cross country for a fourth straight year.

    Muhammed Ahmed of UC Davis won the men’s individual title with a time of 24:14.2.

    The Mustang men claimed their 21st team title with six runners in the top 10 for 27 points. 

    UC San Diego's Sylvana Northrop won the women’s 6K, crossing the finish line in 20:42.1.

    The Cal Poly women won the Big West crown for the 11th time with five runners in the top 11 for 31 total points. 

    The Big West had one individual qualifier at the NCAA Championships in Cal Poly junior Kelli Gaffney


    SOCCER 


    No. 2 seed Cal Poly captured its first Big West Women's Soccer Championship since 2004, defeating fifth-seeded UC Santa Barbara, 1-0, in the title match.

    Championship MVP Jessie Halladay scored the decisive goal with just 115 seconds remaining in regulation to secure the Mustangs' fourth conference crown and NCAA Championship berth.

    Returning to the national postseason for the first time in 21 years, Cal Poly challenged top-seeded and nationally-ranked Stanford in the opening round of the NCAA Championship, scoring just 49 seconds into the match before falling 3-1.

    Six Big West women’s soccer student-athletes earned United Soccer Coaches All-West Region recognition, highlighted by first-team selection Jessie Halladay

    No. 2 seed UC Irvine defeated top-seeded and host UC Santa Barbara for the 2026 Big West Men’s Soccer Championship title. It was the Anteaters’ sixth Big West Championship title in program history.

    UC Irvine was selected to compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship. The Anteaters fell to Denver in the first round of the national tournament.

    The Big West took 11 slots on the United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region men’s soccer teams with three players representing three member-institutions on the first team.

    The Big West had two men's soccer standouts selected in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft. UC Davis senior defender Zack Lillington was selected with the seventh overall pick to St. Louis CITY SC.     Women's soccer led all fall sports with 115 selections to the 2025 Big West Fall Academic All-Conference Team.


    WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL 


    In a battle between the top two seeds in the bracket, second-seeded Cal Poly upended first-time regular-season champion UC Davis 3-1 in the final match of The Hawaiian Islands presents the 2025 Outrigger Big West Women's Volleyball Championship to capture the crown and earn an 18th appearance into the NCAA bracket. The Mustangs are the third consecutive No. 2 seed to take home the title in the three-year-old event.

    Competing in the USC Regional, Big West champion Cal Poly upended No. 5 seed BYU in five before taking down the host Trojans in five in the second round to advance to the Sweet 16. 

    The Mustangs fell at No. 1 Kentucky and capped the year with a mark of 27-8 to tie the program’s season-high wins record. Cal Poly is the only unseeded team to advance to the third round since the NCAA’s seeding format changed in 2022, and the Mustangs are the first Big West team to earn a spot in the regionals since 2019.

    Three Big West standouts were named to the AVCA All-Pacific Region, with Cal Poly’s Chloe Leluge, Big West Championship Most Valuable Player, joined by Big West Player of the Year Jade Light of UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara’s Eva Travis. Regardless of various regional changes throughout the years, The Big West has enjoyed at least one All-Region/All-District selection every season, since 1986.  Dating back to the 2015 season, this marks the ninth set of All-Region listings to include at least three Big West performers.

    A total of 17 women’s volleyball players representing eight member-institutions earned CSC Academic All-District Team honors. 


    MEN’S WATER POLO 


    No. 3 seed UC Davis claimed its first Big West Men's Water Polo Championship title, defeating top-seeded Long Beach State, 12-11, at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. The Aggies secured the conference's automatic berth into the National Collegiate Men's Water Polo Championship and their first national postseason appearance since 2022.

    UC Davis represented The Big West in the National Collegiate Men's Water Polo Championship quarterfinals before falling to host and third-seeded Stanford.

    The Big West placed six student-athletes on the ACWPC All-America Teams, highlighted by third team selection Tommy Kiesling of UC Davis. Five additional conference standouts earned honorable mention recognition.

    Five Big West programs concluded the season ranked in the final CWPA Poll: No. 7 UC Davis, No. 8 Long Beach State, No. 14 UC Santa Barbara, No. 15 UC San Diego, and No. 16 UC Irvine.

    A total of 27 student-athletes earned CSC Academic All-District honors, while 61 were recognized on the Big West Fall Academic All-Conference Team. 


  • SWIMMING & DIVING 


    Hawai'i swept the team titles at the 2026 Big West Swimming & Diving Championships, capturing both the men's and women's crowns. The men's program secured its first-ever conference championship, while the women's program claimed its second title and first since 1986.

    Seven Big West student-athletes qualified for the 2026 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships following championship-winning performances.

    A multitude of records fell at the Championships, with 17 new benchmarks set at Houston’s CRWC Natatorium.

    A total of 24 student-athletes representing four member institutions were named CSC Academic All-District selections.

    Women's swimming & diving led all winter sports with 93 Academic All-Conference honorees, while men's swimming & diving added 73 selections.


    BASKETBALL 


    No. 2 seed Hawai‘i claimed the 2026 Credit Union 1 Big West Men’s Basketball Championship over top-seeded UC Irvine by a final score of 71-64. The Rainbow Warriors earned the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and received a No. 13 seed.

    UC Irvine received a bid into the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) for the fourth straight year and 10th time overall. The Anteaters hosted the first-round matchup of the 32-team national postseason tournament as a No. 4 seed.

    In non-conference action, UC San Diego won the Terry’s Chocolates ESPN Events Invitational in November in dominant fashion and UC Santa Barbara claimed the title at the Resorts World Las Vegas Classic.

    Five Big West men’s basketball players were named to the NABC All-Pacific District teams, with first-team honoree Isaac Johnson (Hawai‘i) headlining the listings. Second-team honors went to CSUN guard Josiah Davis, UC Irvine forward Kyle Evans, CSUN guard Larry Hughes II and Cal Poly guard/forward Hamad Mousa.

    Second-seeded UC San Diego came from behind to down No. 4 seed Hawai’i to claim back-to-back titles at the 2026 Credit Union 1 Big West Women’s Basketball Championship. The Tritons went on to take on TCU in Fort Worth, falling to the eventual Elite Eight team and No. 3 seed Horned Frogs who were led by second-overall pick in the WNBA draft, Olivia Miles.

    Joining the Tritons in the national postseason, Big West regular-season champion UC Irvine competed in the WBIT while UC Davis claimed a berth in the field of the WNIT. Overall, five women’s teams hit the 20-win mark on the season.

    A total of 20 men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes representing six member-institutions were tapped for the CSC Academic All-District listings.

    As a conference, The Big West women’s basketball teams and their supporters unlocked a $50,000 grant through the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Tough Like Tammy Campaign to bring lifesaving cancer care to under-resourced women in Southern California.


  • MEN’S VOLLEYBALL  


    Hawai’i took home the 2026 National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship, reigning supreme in an All-Big West finale against UC Irvine. This marks the sixth national championship for The Big West in the eight years a title has been awarded since sport sponsorship began in 2018.

    With Big West champion Long Beach State also claiming a spot in the Final Four, The Big West made up 75 percent of the field at Pauley Pavilion, and 25 percent of the expanded 12-team bracket after UH and UCI secured at-large bids to the national postseason making 2026 an historic #ThreeBidBigWest season.

    UC Irvine first-year player Andrej Jokanovic earned the AVCA’s Newcomer of the Year, along with Big West Freshman of the Year honors after guiding the Anteaters to a national runner-up finish.

    All six league programs were ranked in every poll throughout the season and  finished up in the AVCA listings as: No. 1 Hawai'i, No. 2 UC Irvine, No. 4 Long Beach State, No. 10 UC Santa Barbara, No. 11 UC San Diego and No. 18 CSUN.

    Including honorable mention selections, a total of 22 Big West men’s volleyball players earned recognition on the AVCA’s All-American listings. Four men representing three member-institutions were named to the first team, and Hawai’i setter Tread Rosenthal was a finalist for AVCA Player of the Year.

    A total of seven men’s volleyball student-athletes representing four member-institutions were tapped for the CSC Academic All-District listings.


    GOLF 


    The Long Beach State men enjoyed an historic season, winning a fourth consecutive Big West title in record-breaking fashion. The Beach bested the field by 47 strokes, the largest margin of victory in a 54-hole championship contested in Big West history. Another Big West first, LBSU went one through five in the individual standings as one program comprised the entirety of the All-Tournament team for the first time in conference history.

    LBSU went on to earn a No. 4 seed in the regional field, where the team finished seventh to narrowly miss advancing to the Championships final site.

    Big West individual medalist Steen Zeman took fifth at the NCAA Columbus Regional to punch his ticket to Omni La Costa, the first man to advance in the Championships since 2019. Including the recent successes on the women’s side, this marks four straight seasons that a Big West golfer or team has advanced through regional play to represent the conference on the national stage.

    LBSU’s Zeman and Big West Golfer of the Year Alejandro de Castro Piera were both named to the PING All-West Region team, with de Castro Piera claiming Honorable Mention All-American status.

    Entering the 2026 Big West Women’s Golf Championship as the No. 5 seed, Cal Poly was able to earn their fourth title in the last six seasons at the Royal Ka’anapali Course on Maui. Individual honors went to Long Beach State’s Madison Le, who led wire-to-wire. 

    With the Cal State Fullerton women selected as an at-large entrant into the regional field, The Big West saw two teams in the national postseason in back-to-back seasons with the Mustangs, Titans and Le all competing at the Stanford Regional.

    Two-time Big West Golfer of the Year Davina Xanh of Cal State Fullerton was selected as one of 16 amateur golfers to compete in the prestigious Curtis Cup competition where the United States takes on Team Great Britain and Ireland. Xanh is the first known Big West athlete to represent their country in the event established in 1932.

    A total of six men’s and eight women’s golf student-athletes representing five member-institutions were tapped for the CSC Academic All-District listings. 


    TENNIS 


    No. 1 seed UC Santa Barbara swept No. 2 seed UC Irvine 4-0 to win its 15th Big West Men's Tennis Championship title in program history.

    The Gauchos represented The Big West in the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship bracket.

    In October, Azuma Visaya of Hawai‘i (singles) and UC Santa Barbara’s Conrad Brown and Miguel Avendano won The Big West’s fall event and earned automatic bids into the ITA Conference Masters.

    UC Santa Barbara’s Lucca Liu and Dominique Rolland punched tickets to the 2025 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship by virtue of making it to the semifinal round of the ITA West Sectional Championships. Liu made it to the round of 32, while Rolland exited in the round of 64. 

    Coming down to the No. 6 court, No. 1 seed UC Santa Barbara defeated No. 2 seed Cal Poly by a narrow margin of 4-3 to win the 2026 Big West Women’s Tennis Championship. It was the Gauchos’ 12th overall title and sixth in last 10.

    UC Santa Barbara competed in the 2026 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship.

    In the fall, Long Beach State’s Pamela Badillo (singles) and UC Santa Barbara’s Raphaelle Leroux and My-Anh Holmes (doubles) won The Big West’s bids into the ITA Conference Masters Event.

    A total of 24 Big West men’s and women’s tennis student-athletes representing six member-institutions were named to the CSC Academic All-District teams.


    BEACH VOLLEYBALL 


    Top-seeded Cal Poly captured the 2026 Big West Beach Volleyball Championship on its home sand, sweeping second-seeded Long Beach State, 3-0, to claim the program's first conference title since 2022.

    For the fifth consecutive season, The Big West placed multiple teams into the National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship field. Automatic qualifier Cal Poly and at-large selection Long Beach State represented the conference in Gulf Shores, Ala. 

    Cal Poly opened the NCAA Championship with a 3-0 victory over Grand Canyon before falling to third-seeded UCLA in the second round. Long Beach State pushed eighth-seed California to the limit in a tightly contested 3-2 first-round defeat.

    Four Big West pairs earned AVCA All-America recognition. First team honors went to Ella Connor and Erin Inskeep of Cal Poly alongside Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah of Long Beach State. Second team recognition was awarded to Izzy Martinez and Logan Walter of Cal Poly, as well as Julia Lawrenz and Izadora Stedile of Hawai'i.

    Connor and Inskeep, along with Gementera and Hagenah, were selected to train with the 2026 Beach Collegiate National Team during the summer.

    Eight student-athletes representing six Big West member institutions earned CSC Academic All-District recognition as part of the 2026 CSC At-Large Teams.


    WOMEN’S WATER POLO 


    Top-seeded Hawai'i captured its third consecutive Big West Women's Water Polo Championship, defeating second-seeded Long Beach State, 14-9, in the title match at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.

    Making its 10th National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championship appearance, Hawai'i advanced to the national postseason before falling to fourth-seeded California in quarterfinal action.

    The Big West placed 12 student-athletes on the 2026 ACWPC All-America Teams, highlighted by second team selections Agatha Weston of Hawai'i and Elisa Portillo of Long Beach State. Six member institutions were represented among the conference's All-America honorees.

    Six Big West programs finished the season ranked in the final CWPA Poll, led by Hawai'i at T-No. 5, T-No. 7 Long Beach State, T-No. 10 UC Irvine, No. 14 UC Davis, T-No. 16 UC San Diego, T-No. 25 CSUN.

    A total of 29 women’s water polo student-athletes earned CSC Academic All-District honors.


    SOFTBALL 


    Top-seeded Cal State Fullerton captured its first Big West Softball Championship title, defeating third-seeded UC Santa Barbara, 1-0, in the championship game behind a dominant pitching performance and complete-game shutout.

    Big West champion Cal State Fullerton earned a victory in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional, rallying for a dramatic 3-2 walk-off win over California Baptist before concluding its postseason run later that evening against South Carolina.

    Four Big West student-athletes earned NFCA All-West Region recognition. Jamie McGaughey of Hawai'i garnered second team honors, while Taryn Irimata (Hawai'i), Sarah Perez (Cal State Fullerton), and Maalia Cherry (UC San Diego) earned third team distinction.

    A total of 18 Big West baseball student-athletes representing seven member-institutions were named to the CSC Academic All-District team.


    BASEBALL 


    No. 2 seed Cal Poly secured the 2026 Big West Baseball Championship for the second-straight year with a 4-3 victory in the if-necessary title game. The Mustangs won the league’s automatic bid into the national tournament.

    Cal Poly, winners of the Big West Championship, and regular-season co-champion UC Santa Barbara represented The Big West in the 2026 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. 

    Cal Poly won the Los Angeles regional, hosted by No. 1 national seed UCLA. The Mustangs defeated Virginia Tech and St. Mary’s, twice, to advance to the Morgantown super regional.

    At the Austin regional, UC Santa Barbara fought back from the loser’s bracket to make it to the regional final, falling to host Texas.

    No less than 19 former Big West baseball players suited up for Opening Day of the 2026 Major League Baseball season. 

    Cal Poly catcher Ryan Tayman and UC Santa Barbara pitcher Jackson Flora received ABCA All-West Region First-Team accolades. Cal State Fullerton outfielder Paul Contreras, Hawai’i starting pitcher Isaiah Magdaleno, Cal State Fullerton starting pitcher Mikiah Negrete and Cal Poly closer Nick Bonn were placed on the second team.

    The Big West had four All-Americans in Cal Poly closer Nick Bonn, UC Santa Barbara starting pitcher Jackson Flora, Hawai’i starting pitcher Isaiah Magdaleno and Cal Poly catcher Ryan Tayman earning spots on various lists.

    UC Santa Barbara starting pitcher Jackson Flora was named National Pitcher of the Year by the College Baseball Foundation (Hall of Fame) and Perfect Game.

    A total of 13 Big West baseball student-athletes representing five member-institutions were named to the CSC Academic All-District team, and UC Davis pitcher Rowen Barnes earned Academic All-American distinction.


    TRACK & FIELD 


    The Cal Poly men and UC Irvine women captured titles at the 2026 Big West Track & Field Championships. For the Mustangs, the win came in three-peat fashion after totaling 201.5 points. The Anteater women earned their second title in as many season, compiling 187.5 points for the win.

    The Big West sent an impressive batch of 98 overall qualifiers to the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships First Round in Fayetteville, Ark. The figure is down from 116 last year, but an improvement from 84 in 2024, 62 from 2023, 47 from 2022, and 41 from 2021.

    The Big West had 19 qualifiers at the 2026 NCAA Championships.

    The Big West took seven slots on the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America First and Second Teams.

    Three Big West student-athletes were podium finishers at nationals. 200m – Ian Dossman (Cal State Fullerton), Decathlon – Ryan Gregory (Long Beach State), Triple Jump – Chelsea Aninyei (UC Riverside).

    A total of 46 Big West track & field student-athletes representing seven member-institutions were named to the CSC Academic All-District team.
