COLUMBUS, Ohio – Long Beach State men’s golf made the biggest leap up the leaderboard on Moving Day in the NCAA Columbus Regional from the Ohio State University Golf Club on Tuesday, improving four places to land in fifth after 36 holes of action.
Should the positioning stand after the final round of play, the Beach would have the opportunity to advance to the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships final site at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., from May 29-June 3. The low five teams and low individual on a non-advancing team earn a place in the field at La Costa, 75 miles down I-5 from the LBSU campus.
Tuesday’s round saw the Beach fire off an aggregate score of 6-over 290 in the 5-count-4 format, paced by Big West individual medalist Steen Zeman’s 3-under 68. Zeman finished with six birdies on the day and jumped up into a tie for second, improving 18 places on the leaderboard. Jack Cantlay finished with an even-par 71 round that included an eagle on the 575-yard par-5 fourth hole, Cantlay’s 14th hole of the day after starting on No. 10. The senior from Los Alamitos, Calif., moved into a tie for 10th in the individual standings.
Big West Golfer of the Year Alejandro de Castro Piera also saw a marked improvement on the day, up 15 spots individually after a round of 2-over 73. The senior from Sant Esteve Sesrovieres, Spain, began the round with three consecutive birdies to highlight the day and help the LBSU rise up the team leaderboard.
Through two rounds, Long Beach State has put together a total of 20-over 588, seven strokes back from third-place Stanford and five behind fourth-place Arizona State and holding on to the final qualifying team position. Immediately behind the beach are Florida State (+21) and Illinois State (+22) as the Seminoles and Redbirds are among those giving chase for the top five.
The last time a Big West team advanced to the Championships final site was 2008’s UC Irvine team, after the Anteaters took third in their region. LBSU’s best regional finish came in 2024, a seventh-place showing at the Chapel Hill Regional.
The final round from Columbus for the Beach begins at 8 a.m. ET/5 a.m. PT, again going off the 10th tee, and coupled with golfers from Arizona State and Florida State as the trio look toward advancement.
