Among the early standouts, No. 11 Long Beach State has set the tone with strong play throughout the lineup, highlighted by senior duo Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah, who continue to build on their program-record careers with an 11-3 mark at the top flight thus far in 2026. LBSU also holds an 11-3 mark at the No. 2 position this season, highlighted by an 8-2 record from Tineke Hinton and Demi Wagdy, while Kiara Edwards and Savannah Standage added a 3-1 showing in the spot last weekend at the Stanford Invitational

Hawai’i, ranked No. 13, enters the weekend as one of the most battle-tested teams in the nation with a 7-8 overall record against a schedule that has featured eight ranked opponents, including seven top-10 matchups. The Rainbow Wahine own one of the top wins in the country this season with a 3-2 upset over then-No. 1 UCLA, and continue to show lineup flexibility with 17 different pair combinations utilized. The No. 1 duo of Julia Lawrenz and Izadora Stedile has provided stability, compiling a 10-4 overall record, including an 8-3 mark in the top flight, while the pair of Sophie Buschmann and Julia Thelle has been a steady presence across the No. 2 and 3 positions, appearing in 14 of 15 matches together.

At the top of the conference, No. 3 Cal Poly has been dominant to open the year, entering the weekend with an 11-1 dual record and an impressive 36-4 overall pairs mark (.900 winning percentage). The Mustangs have showcased depth across all five flights, going a perfect 8-0 in the No. 2 position while posting 7-1 records in four other flights. The duo of Izzy Martinez and Logan Walter has been perfect, remaining undefeated at 8-0 while competing primarily in the top two positions, while Ella Connor and Erin Inskeep have added a 7-1 mark, including success at the No. 1 flight. Additional unbeaten pairs, including Hannah Byers/Maddy Byrne and Julia Westby/Elise Lenahan (both 5-0), highlight the Mustangs’ balance and depth throughout the lineup.

The Mustangs enter The Big West Challenge looking to replicate last season’s dominant performance, where CP went a perfect 6-0, while LBSU (5-1) and UH (4-2) followed closely behind, underscoring the depth and competitiveness throughout the league.

With every team guaranteed a matchup against each conference opponent and no second chances during the regular season, The Big West Challenge remains one of the most important weekends on the calendar, offering a preview of the championship race and a defining opportunity to separate in the standings.
