Mustangs Stave Off Elimination with Triumph Over Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. --
Cal Poly defeated No. 12 seed and host Oregon 10-8 in the first elimination game of the Eugene Regional of the 2025 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, Saturday at PK Park.
 
The Mustangs improve to 42-18 overall and will face the loser of the Arizona-Utah Valley matchup in another elimination game, Sunday, June 1 at 3 p.m. The Ducks end their season with a 42-16 overall record.  
 
Cal Poly’s offense showed out, scoring at least one run in six of the eight innings it batted in. Casey Murray Jr. went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with one home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Dylan Kordic and Ryan Fenn also had two RBI each. Starter Josh Volmerding went 5.2 innings and was relieved by Josh Murano who threw 1.0 inning. Jaccob Torres (5-4) threw the final 2.1 innings and was credited with the win.
 
The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead on a Kordic 2-run homer in the second inning, but Oregon answered with one run in the top of the third for a 2-1 game. Fenn hit a sacrifice fly to score Dante Vachini in the bottom of the third to give back Cal Poly a two-run lead.
 
The Ducks scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to even the score, 3-3. Fenn plated Vachini yet again, this time on a single, in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Mustangs went back on top.
 
Oregon hit two home runs, a solo and 2-run, in the top of the sixth inning to claim a 6-4 advantage. Murray Jr. responded with a solo shot to make it a one-run ballgame. Home runs in two straight at bats in the top of the seventh gave the Ducks a three-run lead, 8-5.
 
Cal Poly won the game in the bottom of the seventh. Jack Collins and Vachini got on base on balls and Zach Daudet singles to load the bases. Alejandro Garza drew a walk to plate Collins for one run. Murray Jr. poked a ball to left field for two more runs. Finally Cam Hoiland put a ball into right field to score Garza for a 9-8 Mustang lead.
 
Daudet hit a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth for insurance and to account for the final score of the game.
