Day 2 Highlighted with Wins from CSUN, UH and UCSB in Inaugural Championship

No. 5 seed Hawai'i 11, No. 1 seed Cal State Fullerton 5

No. 5 seed Hawai'i erupted for a nine run seventh inning to secure an 11-5 victory over top seed Cal State Fullerton during Game 4 inaugural 2025 Big West Softball Championship from at Anderson Family Field on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. 

The game was tied at five runs apiece going into the seventh inning before the Rainbow Wahine’s outburst. UH 11 hits and committed no errors, while CSF managed 11 hits but was hindered by two errors. Hawai’i hitters combined for eight RBIs and one home run, while their pitching staff held Fullerton scoreless in the final three innings. 

Jamie McGaughey led the team with three RBIs and a home run that sparked the comeback bid for UH. Izabella Martinez was instrumental reaching base twice, while Milan Ah Yat put together two RBIs. Additionally, Liliana Thomas shined bright on defense with five assists, complementing two runs and one RBI offensively. Millie Fidge made a notable impact as a pitcher with a 4.1 innings performance, allowing only one earned run and striking out two.  


Colby McClinton stood out for CSF, scoring two runs and hitting a home run, showcasing her impact in the lineup. Nataly Lozano also made a significant contribution with three hits and one RBI, leading the team in hits for the game. Sarah Coccillos was effective at driving in runs, as she registered two RBIs, the most on the team. Trisha McCleskey pitched a complete game, striking out 10 batters over seven innings, illustrating her role as a key pitcher for Fullerton. 

UH is now 2-0 in the Championship and will face the winner of Game 5 tomorrow, May 9 at 1 p.m. CSF is slated to play UCSB later this evening in Game 6 (elimination) at 7 p.m. 


 
No. 2 seed CSUN 4, No. 6 seed UC San Diego 2

A decisive sixth inning helped No. 2 CSUN capture to a 4-2 victory over No. 6 UC San Diego in Game 5 of the inaugural 2025 Big West Softball Championship from at Anderson Family Field on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. 

CSUN opened the scoring with a run in the first inning and secured the victory with a decisive three-run rally in the sixth. The Tritons responded in the third inning with two runs, but the Matadors' pitching from Lauryn Carranco and Isabella Alonso held them scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Matadors' offensive highlights included home runs in clutch moments.   

Escutia led the team with two RBIs and also recorded a home run and a double, making significant contributions to the offense. Vargas Sandoval blasted a ball out of the park, contributing one RBI and scoring a run. In the circle, Carranco delivered a solid pitching performance, throwing six innings and allowing only six hits with no earned runs. Alonso secured two saves in her appearances, pitching a perfect inning without allowing any hits or runs.  

Alexis Jimenez notched a home run and drove in two runs in an appearance as the designated player. In the circle, India Caldwell tossed a complete game, striking out six batters over six innings, despite allowing four earned runs on eight hits. The performance was bolstered by 115 pitches, with 78 strikes thrown. Additionally, senior Alexa DeMarse demonstrated defensive skills at third base, with four assists in the field.  

CSUN enters the winner's bracket in the Championship and will face Hawai’i tomorrow on May 9 at 1 p.m. CSF is slated to play No. 3 UCSB later this evening in Game 6 (elimination) at 7 p.m. 


No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara 6, No. 1 seed Cal State Fullerton

No. 3 UC Santa Barbara downed top seed and host site Cal State Fullerton with a 6-2 victory, highlighted by a pair of three-run innings in the fifth and sixth at Anderson Family Field. 

UCSB broke a scoreless tie with a three-run rally in the fifth inning and added three more runs in the sixth to secure the win. CSF took an early lead with two runs in the second inning but were held scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Gauchos' offense was powered by 11 hits, including one double and one triple, while their pitching staff limited the Titans to five hits. 

Jazzy Santos delivered a strong performance with two runs and two RBIs, highlighted by a huge triple that sparked the Gauchos. Defensively with five assists. Giselle Mejia led the team with three hits and added an RBI while taking a walk. Elicia Acosta recorded two RBIs and added a hit. Malaya Johnson was stellar in the circle pitching a complete game, on only five hits and two earned runs over seven innings, alongside a pair of strikeouts.  

Big West Field Player of the Year, Ava Arce led the Titans with a standout performance, hitting a home run and contributing one RBI. Kristalyn Romulo delivered a triple and added an RBI to the team's total. On the mound, Trisha McCleskey pitched six innings, striking out seven batters despite allowing ten hits and six earned runs.   

UCSB lives to see another day tomorrow during Game 8 against No. 6 UCSD at 4 p.m. The winner of the matchup will face the loser of Game 7 for a chance to clinch a spot in the first-ever Big West Softball Championship game. The Titans season comes to a close at 37-17 .
