The Big West Men's Tennis Notebook: Three Teams At or Above .500 to Start Season

- The 2025 season for Big West men's tennis teams is well underway. Three teams are at or above .500 heading into February. 

UC Santa Barbara (3-0, 0-0 BW) is undefeated with wins over Oklahoma State, Nevada, Texas Tech and Cal. The Gauchos have five nationally-ranked singles players in No. 21 Gianluca Brunkow, No. 65 Diogo Morais, No. 94 Dominique Rolland, No. 117 Conrad Brown and No. 122 Lucca Liu. The pair of Brunkow and Rolland are No. 37 in doubles. 

UC Santa Barbara (1-3, 0-0 BW) defeated No. 21 Vanderbilt by a score of 4-1 at the ITA Kickoff Weekend for its lone win of the season. The Gauchos are ranked No. 24 in the latest ITA team rankings. Amelia Honer, the No. 16 singles player in the nation, is 3-0 so far, all in No. 1 singles. The team of Honer and Marie Weissheim are the ninth-ranked doubles pair in the country. 

Cal Poly (1-0, 0-0 BW) won its opening match against Sacramento State to start the season on the right foot. 

UC Irvine (2-2, 0-0 BW) defeated Pepperdine and San Diego State for its two wins. Noah Zamora is ranked No. 31 in singles.

Zach Pellouchoud of UC San Diego (1-2, 0-0 BW) is off to an unbeaten start, going 2-0 in singles. 

Azuma Visaya of Hawai'i (0-6, 0-0 BW) is ranked 77th in singles.

Fall NCAA Highlights
UC Irvine’s Noah Zamora represented The Big West at the 2024 NCAA Tennis Championships as a singles player. 

The Anteater senior got the qualification after making it to the final of the singles competition at the ITA Men’s Southwest Regionals before falling to Spencer Johnson of UCLA. Zamora's run to the championship match include victories over Diego Dalisay (Hawai'i), Sebastian Nothhaft (LMU), Lucca Liu (UC Santa Barbara) and Casper Christensen (Arizona).

Zamora advanced past the first round of the championship with a straight set win over Sebastian Dominko of Notre Dame, before succumbing in the round of 32.

No. 2 seed UC Irvine knocked off No. 1 seed UC Santa Barbara, 4-1 to capture the 2024 Big West Championship. It was UCI's fifth overall title and second since 2022. 

 In doubles play, the duo of Brandon Park and Matthew Sah got done first at No. 3 with a 6-2 triumph. UCSB responded at No. 1 doubles with a 6-4 victory from Kai Brady and Pablo Masjuan to tie up the action in doubles. From there, it came down to the No. 2 position as Gianluca Brunkow and Lucca Liu clinched in dramatica fashion, 7-6 (9-7) to capture the point for UCSB.  

In singles play, Enrique Luque Rico made quick work at the topflight, 6-2, 6-1 to knot the match at one-all. Andy Nguyen of UC Irvine contributed a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 4 to give the Anteaters a 2-1 lead. From there, the ‘Eaters were able to take home No. 3 singles courtesy of Noah Zamora’s 6-3, 6-2 triumph. 
UC Irvine clinched the title on court two when Hiroki Sakagawa fended off Gianluca Brunkow of UC Santa Barbara, 6-2, 7-6 (3) after facing deficits of 0-3 and 5-6.
