UC San Diego's Sumayah Sugapong Scores Season's Third Big West Player of the Week Award

  • 8138After guiding UC San Diego to a 2-0 road weekend, sophomore Sumayah Sugapong has claimed Big West Player of the Week honors for the third time this season (Dec. 2, Dec. 16). UC San Diego players have now combined for four such awards, the most for the Tritons in a season. 

  • Sugapong  averaged 22.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in dominating wins at UC Santa Barbara and CSUN. 

  • Against the Gauchos, the guard collected a game-high 21 points in the 62-43 win, with an 11-of-12 outing from the free throw line. Sugapong secured a career-best eight rebounds to go along with three assists on Thursday. 

  •  The San Diego native poured in 23 points and finished 5-of-8 from three-point range in Saturday’s 82-44 victory at CSUN. Sugapong also added five rebounds, a team-best four assists and a pair of steals to cap the weekend with a fifth 20-point performance of the season.  

  • Sugapong is leading The Big West in assists (3.9) and steals (2.48) per game through the midpoint of league action. UCSD is currently tied for fourth in the standings with the top eight squads advancing to the 2025 Hercules Tires Big West Women’s Basketball Championship, presented by Credit Union 1. This is the first year the Tritons are eligible for postseason play after completing a four-year reclassification period to Division I.
