In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and this year's theme, "Together, We Are More," The Big West is highlighting the student-athletes and staff who proudly represent the conference's diverse cultures, traditions, and communities. In cohesion of National Coaches' Day, Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball head coach Ray Alvarado shared how family and Hispanic heritage shaped a coaching journey spanning three decades.

Speaking with Big West partner Dan Tortora on Journey Out West, Alvarado recalled waking before sunrise to work in the fields alongside family. Those experiences, coupled with parents who encouraged their children to pursue greater opportunities, made reaching the Division I sidelines more meaningful. The Central Valley native emphasized the importance of mentors who help others navigate challenges and achieve their goals.

Tortora also shared a personal connection, reflecting on the family values woven through Italian and Hispanic heritage and noting that a Guatemalan cousin's birthday falls on Sept. 15, the opening day of Hispanic Heritage Month. Both agreed that celebrating culture and supporting others should extend beyond a single month.

For Alvarado, togetherness means caring for those nearby and expanding a circle of support so others can follow. Watch the full conversation on Journey Out West, The Big West's new podcast with Tortora, for more on Alvarado's roots and vision for Cal State Bakersfield.
