Pillar Feature: Bold Activism with The Big West SAAC

Watch the Video

Being Bold has always been an emphasis in The Big West.

The conference is united in the pursuit of boundless opportunities, enduring integrity, bold activism, fearless innovation, and the Pacific spirit of freedom, exploration, and progress. These four pillars serve as the foundation of the league’s core values and beliefs.

This week, Clark highlighted one of the five pillars of The Big West’s mission statement.

Clark focused on the league’s “Bold Activism” initiative and asked The Big West’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) what it means to be Bold in their everyday lives.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience and meets separately on each of the 11 campuses throughout the year to plan, participate in, and facilitate events for the student-athlete community. SAAC also offers input on the policies, rules, and regulations that affect student-athletes lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

SAAC meets monthly throughout the academic year to help develop and execute each of the designated initiatives.

Each year, the group meets to discuss the individual campus goals for the upcoming year as well as to strategize and collaborate on conference-wide community service initiatives through #BigWestCares.

During this year’s in-person meeting in Irvine, Calif, Clark caught up with the group’s 22 members and gained insight into what being Bold means to The Big West’s student-athletes across all 11 institutions.

To many student-athletes, being Bold can be defined as not being afraid and believing in yourself. Being Bold means going the extra mile and always having confidence in everything you do. Being Bold can even inspire and uplift others to reach a new height of courage and determination. Overall, it is important to be Bold in everything you do not only in the field of play as a student-athlete, but in the classroom and during daily life as well.
