Wong Named Big West Associate Commissioner for Championships

IRVINE, Calif. – The Big West announced today that Cheryl Wong has been hired as Associate Commissioner for Championships and Sport Administration for the 11-institution NCAA Division I conference. 
 
In her role, Wong will serve on the senior staff and will spearhead the planning and execution of all Big West championship events and serve as the lead sport administrator for multiple sports. In 2024-25, the total number of Big West championships expands to 21 with the addition of conference championships in men’s and women’s swimming and diving, baseball and softball.  
 
“We are excited to welcome Cheryl to The Big West,” Commissioner Dan Butterly said. “Her track record of running successful championship events is unmatched. As we move into a new era with all Big West sports having a post-season championship, we will look to Cheryl’s leadership and our staff to continually enhance and improve the championship experience for student-athletes and fans alike.” 
 
Wong most recently served as the Associate Commissioner, Sport Management and Championships at the Pac-12 Conference. In her eleven years with the Pac-12, she served as the sport liaison for twelve Olympic sports, implemented two inaugural championships and transitioned five championships to upgraded venues. She also led the Pac-12 Sustainability Platform and assisted in the launch of the Pac-12's international basketball games.  
 
Wong has held a variety of positions in nearly 20 years in collegiate and professional athletics, starting as an athletic trainer at UCLA and stops in marketing and corporate sponsorship. Making her mark in stadium and event operations, she has had stints with four professional teams in the NFL and NBA. Prior to joining the Pac-12 Conference office, Wong oversaw the travel operations for the athletic department at the University of California, Berkeley. She completed an undergraduate degree at UCLA and holds a master’s degree from the University of Miami. 
 
Wong has served as an executive board member for the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) since 2018, is an active member of Women Leaders in College Sports and alumni of the Dr. Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute.

Wong is set to join The Big West on March 4, 2024.
