No. 1 Seed UC Santa Barbara and No. 2 Seed UC Irvine to Rematch in Big West Championship Final for Second Consecutive Year

SAN DIEGO (April 29, 2023) -- No. 1 seed UC Santa Barbara defeated No. 4 seed Hawai'i 4-1 in the 2023 Big West Championship semifinals, Saturday at Barnes Tennis Center. 
 
The Gauchos (21-3) move on to play No. 2 seed UC Irvine in Sunday's championship final. The Rainbow Warriors conclude their season at 11-9. 

UC Santa Barbara took the doubles points, winning the first and third flights. In No. 3 doubles, Pablo Masjuan and Gianluca Brunkow defeated Karl Collins and Vojtech Vlkovsky 6-4. Hawai'i won the No. 2 doubles as Axel Labrunie and Kilian Maitre topped Conrad Brown and Luka Mrsic 6-4. Phillip Jordan and Kai Brady downed Andre Ilagan and Luca Labrunie 6-3 in the top spot to clinch the point. 

The Gauchos earned a 3-0 advantage winning No. 3 and No. 6 singles. In the third spot, Mrsic bested Guillaume Tattevin 6-2, 6-2, and Kai Brady defeated Andy Hernandez 6-4, 6-2 in the six hole. 

Hawai'i avoided the shutout as 74th-ranked Ilagan defeated Jordan 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 1 slot. Brown clinched it for the Gauchos in the No. 5 spot with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 triumph.

SAN DIEGO (April 29, 2023) -- No. 2 seed UC Irvine took down No. 3 seed UC Davis by a final score of 4-1 in the semifinals of the 2023 Big West Men’s Tennis Championship, Saturday at Barnes Tennis Center.
 
The Anteaters (13-8) advance and face No. 1 seed UC Santa Barbara in Sunday's finals. The Aggies end their season at 14-7. 

The Anteaters took the doubles point by winning the No. 1 and No. 3 slots. MAtthew Sah and Rithvik Krishna downed Lucas Bollinger and Coleton Hootman 6-2 in the three hole and Noah Zamora and Brandon Park defeated Mitchell Davis and Andre Volgin in a tiebreaker 7-6 (2). 

Zamora made quick work of Constantinos Djakouris 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot to give the Anteaters a two-score advantage, but not before Bollinger topped Ali Amiri 7-5, 6-4 at No. 6 singles to close the gap to one. 

In matches that ended almost simultaneously, Enrique Luque Rico bested Volgin in comeback fashion 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the top flight and Thomas Smart took out Sam De Vries 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 5 slot for the clinch.
