IRVINE, Calif. (April 11, 2023) -- A total of 82 student-athletes who compete in the winter sports of men’s and women’s basketball across The Big West were honored for their work in the classroom and on the playing field as members of the 2022-23 Big West Winter Academic All-Conference Team.
In order to qualify for the Academic All-Conference honor, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.00 cumulative institutional grade point average (GPA), must have completed one full academic year at the member institution prior to the season for which the award is being received, and must have competed in at least 50 percent of the institution's contests in the student-athlete's respective sport.
Four honorees sported a perfect 4.00 GPA in Long Beach State's Ma'Qhi Berry and Lauren Green, UC Irvine's Nikki Tom and UC San Diego's Madison Baxter. 17 of the 82 had a GPA north of 3.75.
By sport, women’s basketball had 51 honorees, while men’s basketball had 31.
By school UC San Diego had the most student-athletes honored with 12. Not far behind the Tritons was UC Santa Barbara with 10 and UC Riverside with nine. CSUN, Hawai'i and Long Beach State had eight honorees each.
The Big West recognizes individuals academically per season – fall, winter, and spring – for all conference-sponsored sports.
The Fall Academic All-Conference Team was announced in February, and the Spring Academic All-Conference Team will honor student-athletes from men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s track and field, women’s water polo, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s volleyball, beach volleyball, softball and baseball.
