IRVINE, Calif. – As previously announced, some Big West women’s and men’s basketball programs have been significantly impacted by major injuries that resulted in roster sizes so small that games were cancelled pursuant to the membership’s long-standing force majeure policy. As a result, some teams will play less than the full 20-game conference schedule.
After consideration this week, The Big West’s Council Executive Committee and Board of Directors Administrative Committee decided to reinstate the tiebreaking procedures that were used the past two seasons to determine championship seeding when teams did not complete an equal number of Big West games. Therefore, that adjusted tiebreaking criteria will be in place for determining championship seeding for the 2023 Hercules Tires Big West Basketball Championships, presented by The Hawaiian Islands. Additionally, the Committee reviewed and reaffirmed the terms of the force majeure policy specifying that regular-season standings and championship seeding will be determined based on winning percentage in Big West contests, regardless of total number of games played. “I want to thank the membership for its work reviewing Big West bylaws and reinstating tiebreaking procedures to use now that both the men and women will have unequal conference schedules in 2023,” Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly said. “We are looking forward to seeing 20 men’s and women’s basketball teams compete for two Big West titles and the right to represent the league on the national stage in the 2023 NCAA Division I Basketball Championships.”
