The Big West Reveals Men’s Tennis All-Conference Teams and Major Award Winners

IRVINE, Calif. (May 4, 2022) -- The All-Big West men’s tennis teams and major award winners have been announced, three days after the conclusion of the 2022 Big West Women’s Tennis Championship. The teams and awards were voted on by the league’s seven head coaches.
 
Hawai’i senior Andre Ilagan is The Big West Player of the Year. Ilagan went 9-4 overall in singles play, all in the top flight, and 3-1 in conference action. He was ranked as high as 11th nationally in singles in the ITA rankings, and currently sits in 40th in the latest edition. Ilagan not only made the All-Big West First Team as a singles player, but also as a doubles pair as well alongside his partner Karl Collins. Together they went 9-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play as the Rainbow Warriors’ top duo.
 
UC Irvine’s Noah Zamora and Ryan Torres of UC Davis tied in the voting and will each be named The Big West Co-Freshman of the Year. Torres went 21-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play. He was undefeated in #1 singles at 4-0 and went 16-5 in the #2 spot. Zamora went 17-4 overall, 13-2 in duals and 3-1 in conference action. He played in many different positions, going 1-0 at #1 singles, 3-0 in the second line, 6-1 in the third flight, 2-0 in fours and 1-1 in the five spot. Both Zamora and Torres were second team selections as singles players. Zamora was a fist team selection as a doubles pair alongside his partner Emmanuel Coste. Torres and fellow freshman Ryan Morgan were placed on the second team as a doubles pair.
 
After leading UC Irvine to the Big West Championship title, its first title since 2011, Anteater head coach Mike Saunders is The Big West Coach of the Year. The Anteaters defeated UC Davis 4-2 in the first round, swept Cal Poly 4-0 in the semifinals and won the title match 4-1 against UC Santa Barbara. The latter two wins avenged losses to those teams in the regular season. UC Irvine went 14-6 overall as a team in the regular season and tied for third in the conference standings with a 4-2 record.
 
Singles players on All-Big West First Team consists of Ilagan, Cal Poly sophomore Noah Berry (13-4 in singles), UC Irvine’s Coste (13-8 in singles), UC Santa Barbara sophomore Phillip Jordan (26-10 in singles), UC Santa Barbara sophomore Pablo Masjuan (15-7 in singles), UC Irvine graduate student Riccardo Roberto (15-7 in singles) and UC Davis junior Andrei Volgin (11-7 in singles). Doubles pair include Ilagan and Collins, Coste and Zamora (13-8 in doubles), UC Santa Barbara’s Jordan and Kai Brady (21-3 in doubles), and Cal Poly’s Joseph Leather and Hendrik Inno (11-6 in doubles).
 
Singles players on the second team are Torres, Morgan, UC Riverside sophomore Antreas Djakouris, UC Santa Barbara senior Victor Krustev, Cal Poly junior Joseph Leather and Hawai’i senior Blaz Seric. Doubles pair on the second team are UC Davis’ Torres and Morgan, Cal Poly’s Colter Smith and Bastiaan Weststrate, UC Santa Barbara’s Masjuan and Gianluca Brunkow, and Volgin and Mitchell Davis of UC Davis.
