Big West wins in BOLD

NEWS AND NOTES

What 2 Watch 4
Non-conference action continues this week around The Big West. Hawai’i is back on O’ahu to kick off a season-long eight-game home stand with four matchups against fifth-ranked 2021 national runner-up Vanderbilt, while CSUN takes its four-game win streak to the Bay Area for a trio of matinees at No. 6 Stanford. The Matadors then head to Phoenix, Ariz., for a midweek pair at Grand Canyon.

A third Big West squad up against ranked opposition is UC Irvine, with the Anteaters in Corvallis, Ore., to face No. 13 Oregon State three times. They welcome another Pac-12 foe, Arizona State, in to Cicerone Field on Tuesday night.

Cal State Fullerton hosts Pepperdine before playing at UCLA in primetime Tuesday. Long Beach State has four home contests on tap, three against North Dakota State over the weekend, and one versus Pepperdine Tuesday. CSU Bakersfield wraps up a season-opening 12-game home stand against Utah (four) and California Baptist (Tuesday).

UC Santa Barbara is in Eugene, Ore., for four with Oregon, and hosts LMU on Tuesday. Cal Poly plays three at UNLV and entertains San José State on Tuesday night. UC San Diego is at Santa Clara for three on its first weekend road trip of the season, before heading across town to challenge USD at Fowler Park on Tuesday. UC Riverside welcomes in undefeated Saint Mary’s for four. UC Davis is off for a second straight weekend, and hosts Pacific on Tuesday.

Poll Chatter
This week, Long Beach State is ranked No. 25 by D1Baseball, No. 22 by Baseball America and No. 28 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). UC Santa Barbara is No. 26 in the Collegiate Baseball poll. Cal Poly, CSUN, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara are all receiving votes outside of the NCBWA’s top 30. UCI, the Beach and UCSB are getting votes beyond USA Today’s top 25.

Pair of Big West Tilts Announced for ESPNU
On Wednesday, Feb. 16, The Big West announced two baseball telecasts on ESPNU this spring which feature the top three teams in the preseason coaches’ poll. Defending conference champion UC Irvine will play at preseason favorite Long Beach State at 1 p.m. PT on Sunday, May 1. Then on May 6, UC Irvine hosts UC Santa Barbara under Friday night lights in a 7 p.m. PT showdown at Cicerone Field. The Anteaters and Gauchos represented The Big West in the NCAA postseason in 2021. Games aired on ESPN networks are available on the ESPN App, accessible on computers, smartphones, tablets and connected devices to fans who receive their video subscription through an authenticated provider.

Big West History
The Big West has sent at least one team to the College World Series in 21 seasons, including a stretch of eight consecutive years from 1988-95 and four in a row from 2014-17. Four current members have represented the Big West at the CWS - Cal State Fullerton (1975, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2015, 2017), Long Beach State (1989, 1991, 1993, 1998), UC Irvine (2007, 2014) and UC Santa Barbara (2016). In 2007, CSF and UCI played in the longest game in CWS history - a five-hour and 40-minute marathon that lasted 13 innings and ended in a 5-4 Anteater victory. The Big West has won two national titles, both by the Titans, in 1995 and 2004.

 Last Week, Today
- CSUN produced a four-game sweep over Pacific to begin the home portion of its schedule, outscoring the Tigers, 46-16. Big West Field Player of the Week Kai Moody batted .529 (9-for-17) and slugged 1.353 with three doubles, one triple, three home runs, six runs scored and nine RBI. Included in that haul was a game-tying grand slam in the third inning on Sunday as the Matadors scored nine unanswered to rally from an early deficit.

- Cal Poly downed Missouri State, two games to one, in a series that was moved from Springfield, Mo., to Arlington, Texas, due to weather concerns. The Mustangs earned a 14-12 decision in the rubber game to conclude Sunday’s doubleheader, getting a three-run shot from star shortstop Brooks Lee in the fifth for his first long ball of the season, and a seventh-inning grand slam from Matt Lopez, both on first-pitch swings.

- UC Santa Barbara also won Sunday’s rubber game with Nevada at home, 12-6, with a threerun triple by No. 9 hitter John Newman Jr., highlighting a seven-run first as the Gauchos sent 13 to the plate. Redshirt sophomore right-hander Cory Lewis earned Big West Pitcher of the Week honors after firing six no-hit, shutout innings with a career-high-tying 11 strikeouts in Friday night’s series-opening 4-1 triumph.

- UC Irvine clinched a series victory at home over Grand Canyon with a 4-2 win on Saturday. The Anteaters struck for four in the fifth inning of Friday night’s opener to overturn a 3-0 deficit and received 3.2 perfect innings from Gordon Ingebritson in relief of starter Michael Frias.

- CSU Bakersfield won a pair of one-run affairs to clinch its home set with Kansas State, walking off the Friday night opener in 11 innings as Nic Anderson-Vine sprinted across while Cory Blackburn reached via infield throwing error. Blackburn had worked a bases-loaded, two-out walk in the ninth to push the contest into extras.

- For the second week in a row, Hawai’i dropped its first two games before winning the next two to earn a split. This time, the Rainbow Warriors were in San Diego to take part in the Tony Gwynn Legacy against a trio of Mountain West foes. UH defeated Fresno State on Sunday after losses to host San Diego State and UNLV. It then pushed across three runs in the 15th inning to outlast the Aztecs in a post-tourney matchup, 8-5, in the longest game in program history at six hours and 14 minutes.

- UC San Diego split its four-game home set with Washington, going 3-2 for the week against Pac12 opposition after its Tuesday triumph at USC.

- Long Beach State dropped a trio of one-run decisions to then-undefeated Sacramento State. The Dirtbags were up 4-0 after six frames attempting to salvage the Sunday finale, before the visiting Hornets struck for five runs in their final three turns at the plate. Cal State Fullerton was also swept in a three-gamer at home, by Gonzaga.

- UC Riverside lost three at UCLA over the weekend, while UC Davis was idle until a narrow 1-0 loss at Saint Mary’s on Tuesday afternoon.

- On Tuesday night, with one run already in and runners at first and second, Jacob King got Poncho Ruiz to hit into a 4-6-3 game-ending double play to preserve a 3-2 victory for UC Irvine at San Diego State. Cal State Fullerton turned a 5-4 deficit into a 7-5 victory over Kansas State through a three-run eighth that featured triples by Nate Nankil, Jack Haley and Caden Connor
