2022-23 Big West Men's Basketball Preview Live Blog

IRVINE, Calif. (Oct. 19, 2022) -- The 2022-23 Big West Men's Basketball Preview Show presented by BuyB1.com will feature the preseason poll results and Preseason All-Big West team. Each team, starting with the lowest ranked to the highest ranked, will be unveiled in 30-minute increments on ESPN+ and via The Big West’s social media channels beginning at 10 a.m. PT.  

Once each team’s position in the poll is known via social media drops every half hour at 3:30 p.m. PT, The Big West’s men’s basketball broadcast duo of Tim Neverett and Richie Schueler will give an overall analysis and reveal the Preaseason All-Big West team. Sideline reporter Molly Sullivan conducted interviews with each head coach for fans to get a flavor for the season to come.

UC Santa Barbara brings back a whopping 13 returners, including guard Ajay Mitchell (11.6 ppg, 3.7 apg), the reigning Big West Freshman of the Year, along with two-time Big West Honorable Mention forward Miles Norris (10.3 ppg, 5.6 rpg) from last year’s campaign. The Gauchos have added four newcomers including graduate transfer forward Andre Kelly, who averaged 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game and was an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention player at Cal.

Hawai'i returns nine players from a year ago, including three starters in All-Big West Second Team guard Noel Coleman (14.1 ppg), and  forwards Kamaka Hepa (9.4 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and Bernardo Da Silva (9.4 ppg, 6.3 rpg). The Rainbow Warriors also return senior forward Samuta Avea and graduate guard Juan Munoz, two projected starters who missed last season entirely. Avea averaged 10.8 points per game for Hawai’i in the 2019-20 season.

A trio of returners anchor reigning Big West regular season champion Long Beach State, highlighted by last season’s leading scorer and All-Big West First Team guard Joel Murray (16.7 ppg). Sophomore two-way sensation Jadon Jones averaged 10.5 points per game and was the Defensive Player of the Year, and forward Aboubacar Traore was the leading rebounder in Big West play, pulling down 9.9 boards per game to go along with 41 blocks. Traore was also one of just five players in the nation to have multiple games of 20 rebounds or more. The Beach bring in 10 newcomers this season.

Junior guard Dawson Baker, an All-Big West Honorable Mention averaging 11.2 points per game in 2021-22, headlines the returners for UC Irvine this season. Baker will be joined by fellow returning starting senior forward JC Butler (6.2 ppg) and junior guard Justin Hohn (7.9 ppg). Newcomer guard Pierre Crockrell II joins the Anteaters from Pacific for his senior season after averaging 4.3 assists per game for the Tigers last year. UC Irvine also added junior college transfer Chazz Hutchison and freshmen Emilis Butkus, Eli Chol, and Hayden Welling to the roster this offseason.

UC Riverside returns over half of its overall and three-point scoring from last season, including one of the Big West’s most experienced back courts with senior Zyon Pullin (14.3 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 4.3 apg) and graduate student Flynn Cameron (10.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg). Pullin was an All-Big West Second Team honoree a season ago. The Highlanders will also add much needed experience and length down low with the additions of Luke Turner, Kyle Owens and Vladimer Salaridze, all of whom come to the Inland Empire by way of the transfer portal.

Junior guard Elijah Pepper (15.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg), an All-Big West Second Team member a season ago and just 95 points away from crossing 1,000 in his career, and senior forward Christian Anigwe (9.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg) are the standout returners from last season's UC Davis team. The Aggies successfully recruited frontcourt depth and size in the offseason, and now boast seven players at 6’7 or taller, after rostering just three in 2021-22.

The Roadrunners dip into the international pool of talent, adding a pair of Lithuanian towers in sophomore transfer Modestas Kancleris and freshman Ugnius Jarusevicius. CSU Bakersfield brings back guard Kaleb Higgins (9.6 ppg), its second-leading scorer from last season, and forward Cameron Smith (6.1 ppg, 3.7 rpg).

Cal Poly retains 80.5 percent of scoring from last season, including senior forward Alimamy Koroma (13.3 ppg, 5.5 rpg), a two-time All-Big West honorable mention selection. The Mustangs bring in four newcomers with Division I experience. Forward Chance Hunter is a graduate transfer from California Baptist, but is no stranger to the conference, having previously played at Long Beach State from 2019-21 and was a two-time All-Big West honorable mention selection during that span.

UC San Diego enters its third year of a four-year reclassification to Division I. The Tritons bring back sharp-shooting junior Jake Kosakowski, the nation’s most accurate three-point shooter last season at 47.3 percent (70-of-148), and sophomore big man Francis Nwaokorie (11.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg), a Kyle Macy Award finalist last year, given to the top freshman in Division I. The 2022-23 season will mark the first season UC San Diego will be included in The Big West standings.

After having his interim tag removed from his title in the offseason, second-year head coach Trent Johnson has added 10 newcomers, including four Division I transfers and a two from junior college. Point guard Atin Wright (14.5 ppg), the team's leading scorer and All-Big West Honorable Mention selection last season, returns for the Matadors. Starting center Onyi Eyisi (9.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg) and forward Fidelis Okereke (5.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg) also come back to anchor the paint.
