Roberson, Frias Earn Baseball Weekly Honors

BASEBALL FIELD PLAYER OF THE WEEK

• CSU Bakersfield sophomore Jacen Roberson garnered Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week accolades after contributing to more than half of his team’s run production in a series sweep of Cal Poly.

• Roberson hit .533 (8-for-15) with a double, triple and two home runs, scored four times and drove in 10 more for the ‘Runners.

• He posted multiple RBI and at least one extra base hit in all four games, and notched multiple hits in three of four as CSUB improved to 15-9 in conference play, good for third place in the Big West standings.

• Roberson provided the game-winning RBI with a two-run single in Friday’s 9-5 victory. He finished the game going 3-for-4 with a triple and a stolen base.

• The Bakersfield native slugged homers in back-to-back games to help the ‘Runners to 5-1 and 6-4 wins. In the latter game, his 2-for-3, 3 RBI effort helped head coach Jeremy Beard collect his 100th career win.

• The homers were Roberson’s fifth and sixth of the year. He slugged 1.133 for the week. He ranks No. 2 in the Big West with a .617 slugging percentage.

BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

• In front of a national ESPNU audience, UC Irvine junior Michael Frias quieted the powerful UC Santa Barbara bats for a complete game shutout and the Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week award.

• With first place on the line in a key conference series, Frias tossed a two hitter in a 6-0 win over the No. 25 Gauchos at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

• It was the first complete game shutout of his career.

• Frias struck a career-high 10 hitters to improve to 7-0 on the season. He ranks fifth in the Big West 74 strikeouts and his seven wins are second among conference hurlers.

• The Irvine native fanned at least one Gaucho in each of the first seven innings and in eight of nine overall.

• Frias retired 14 straight at one point. He carried a no-hitter into the sixth before allowing a pinch hit single. UCSB’s only other hit was a single in the ninth.
