NEWS AND NOTES

What 2 Watch 4
Last week, Hawai’i extended the lead at the top of the table, as the Rainbow Wahine recorded a pair of home sweeps over UC Irvine and UC San Diego to up their winning streak to seven matches. UC Santa Barbara fell another game back after the Gauchos split their road trip and fell 3-1 at the hands of Long Beach State.  Cal Poly’s grip on third in The Big West tightened as the Mustangs beat UC Davis and UC Riverside at home. CSU Bakersfield and UC Irvine complete the top five after both the Roadrunners and Anteaters saw a split decision on the weekend. The top five all hold a .500 or better record in conference games with two weekends remaining in the regular season.

This week’s matches to watch include Hawai’i at Cal Poly as all three weekly winners will be on the court in the marquee matchup. Cal Poly heads into the weekend riding a three-match streak as freshman Tommi Stockham is hitting her stride to lead the offense and Peyton Dueck has been holding down the defense. For the Rainbow Wahine, Amber Igeide has been a force of late, trading in last week’s defensive honor for this week’s offensive acclaim as the trio meet up on the court at Cal Poly on Saturday.

Other hosts this week include CSU Bakersfield, UC Santa Barbara, CSUN, UC Irvine and San Diego. Eight matches are slated for broadcast on ESPN+ - head to bit.ly/BWonEplus for all the conference listings.

Weekly Winners
Familiar faces needed weekly awards, as last week’s top defensive vote-getter turned the tables to pick up Offensive Player of the Week. Hawai’i middle blocker Amber Igiede hit a combined .592 hitting percentage with a team-high 30 kills and 15 blocks in two sweeps for the Rainbow Wahine. Playing big at the net, the sophomore has denied at least one attack attempt in 50-straight matches. The Cal Poly duo of Peyton Dueck and Tommi Stockham nabbed the other two weekly awards. Dueck averaged 5.00 digs per set and added four aces in wins over UC Riverside and UC Davis to scoop up her third Defensive Player of the Week award of the year. An outside hitter for the Mustangs, Stockham was a repeat winner of Freshman of the Week after averaging 3.88 kills per set, 3.75 digs per set to go along with a pair of double-double performances.

Statistically Speaking
Cal State Fullerton remains the NCAA Division I leader in attacks per set (42.79) and digs per set (19.75). UC Santa Barbara’s 13.58 assists per set rates third with 14.44 kills per set coming in fifth in the NCAA, and tops in The Big West. The Gauchos also lead The Big West in hitting percentage (.262), with Hawai’i right behind at .243. Playing big at the net, the Rainbow Wahine is the No. 1 conference team in blocks per set (2.62) and opponent hitting percentage (.180).
