DAVIS, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men and UC Davis women won their respective races at the 2021 Big West Cross Country Championships. The event was hosted by UC Davis at Wildhorse Golf Club.
In the men’s 8K, the individual title went to Cal State Fullerton’s Sam Ayala, as he went wire-to-wire with the lead, crossing the 2K mark at 5:42.1, the 4K mark at 11:45.2, the 6K mark at 17:48.2 and completed the course with a time of 23:34.5. UC Santa Barbara’s Nick Randazzo took second, crossing the finish line in 23:43.5. Cal Poly’s William Fallini-Haas rounded out the top three at 23:47.2.
The Gauchos won the team title with 38 points, using a strong front pack taking three of the top six spots with Randazzo taking second, Brian Schulz (24:07.6) finishing fifth and Zachary Parker (24:10.2) in sixth. UCSB’s fourth and fifth runners went 11-12 to wrap up the scoring for the Gauchos. It is UC Santa Barbara’s eighth Big West title on the men’s side, and their first since 2015. Cal Poly (50), Cal State Fullerton (64), UC Davis (100) and Long Beach State (115) rounded out the top five.
Cal State Fullerton made it a sweep of the individual titles, with Trinity Ruelas winning the women’s 6K with a time of 20:09.0.
UC Davis placed all five scorers in the top 10 to win the team title with 26 points. It is the Aggies’ third team title on the women’s side and first since 2017. UCD went 2-3-5-6-10, with Sierra Atkins and Brianna Weidler leading the way, crossing the finish line at 20:21.3 and 20:38.6. Hope Bergmark (20:43.1), Chloe Arriaga (20:45.5) and Eva Goodisson (20:52.5) were the other scorers for the Aggies. Cal State Fullerton (60), Cal Poly (78), UC Irvine (100) and UC Riverside (116) rounded out the top five.

Up next for all teams will be the NCAA Division I West Regionals, hosted by Sacramento State, at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex on Friday, Nov. 12.
